One of my favorite colors, H/S/S configuration, and a large headstock... YIKES! Better grab the Gas-X  Fender has been rolling out the new goods like mad as of late...

There is already a discussion about the new Lone Stars here:

New Lone Star Strats

Along with the changes being made to the Deluxe Roadhouse Strat, it's starting to look more and more like the end is near for American Specials.

I wish I felt the same... IMHO, the big headstocks are leftovers from overruns of unsold necks from the last few years...

Really? I thought the Highway One was a popular model. I can't imagine Fender letting inventory pile up these days. They are smarter than that.

I agree with orvilleowner that Fender couldn't be using left-over necks from previous years. As far as I can remember these new models are the first MIMs with both the big headstock and 22 frets (there have been several MIM Strats with the big headstock but they were all 21-fret models), and these necks very clearly have the MIM plastic truss rod plug. If they were left-over Highway 1 necks they would have the USA walnut plug.

Also - don't forget the Highway 1 had about the longests "soft" discontinuation run of any Fender model ever. They kind of hung around through 2010 and well into 2011, so I'm sure Fender used up every last Highway 1 body and neck before finally shutting that model down.

The way I see it, the American Special wasn't that much of a value (in terms of money) vs the American Standard. At that price point, you could save a little more and get the more refined American Standard that also included a nice hard-shell case. By incorporating some of the features of Special into a Mexican-made guitar, you get more economical option that includes some nice features as well. When the Black Top series came out, I wondered how long would it be before Fender staring producing more 22-fret models and now we have these new Deluxe models with that feature.

Wasn't that always a contention of ours...that they let the parts bins run down before they went to new orders for stock? Accounted for some of the errors in serial numbers and neck dates for example.

Well, there's a difference between parts they make and parts provided by outside vendors. The neck plates and the decals were ordered from outside vendors. In these cases, I'm sure there were quantity discounts, so they'd order up a whole year's worth of stuff. And unfortunately for us numerically obsessed folks, they didn't apply the neck plates or serial numbers sequentially. Sometimes it seems they pulled parts from the back of the box. (Have you ever seen James Werner's Fender serial number lists?) I remember a story where Fender got a great deal from CTS and ordered a large quantity of pots. While working through that supply, it caused some rather large dating discrepancies between pot date codes and neck dates.

Modern manufacturing methods involve just-as-needed ideas in order to be more efficient and to minimize inventory, waste, etc.

The original Highway was rather popular. The newer ones ended up on clearance racks for nearly the price of MIM Standards...

Right you are. Demand comes and goes. Models have to change with the market, for sure. American Standard became American Series and then back to American Standard. Highway One became American Special (along with some extra buffing, however). They don't want their offerings to get too stale.

The clearance racks is a great way of getting deals, so I am glad about those market tides.
