It seems that anytime I watch a video on youtube of guitarists,...especially country music guitarists,...they seem to have at least three or four different guitars on stage at any given time. Now,...the question,...do they have certain songs that sound better on acoustic than electric or say for instance,a certain song might sound better played on a Tele than a Strat,...or vice versa,...or even,...dare I say it on a Fender site,...a Les Paul?
Now,...silly as that question may sound,...even coming from a beginning guitarist,...I have some ideas running through my head about some songs from the Australian folk music group
"The Seekers" that I will soon be learning to play as solos. Right now the only guitar I have now is my Strat,...but I would like to have a Tele soon as well. Okay,...let's take the song
"I'll Never Find Another You",...as versatile as both the Strat and Tele can be,...I am curious to find out which guitar that song would sound best on,and even which amp it might sound best being played through as well,...a HRD(Hot Rod Deluxe),or DR(Deluxe Reverb),for example...or does it really matter with the amp? I'm sure it would sound good through just about any tube amp from Fender!

Since 'The Seekers" were popular in the mid to late 1960's,and though they were/are mainly an acoustic group,...if you played their songs on guitars such as Strats and Teles
back at that time,...my guess is you would hear some Deluxe Reverb amps,...and maybe Twin Reverbs,...being used. I can hear "Georgy Girl' being played on a Strat through a Deluxe Reverb amp,...Bassman amp,...or a Bandmaster amp, maybe! :)

Many country guitarists play instruments set up for alternative tunings, often optimized for the key of C or F, or configured with a capo for unusual voicings. That may account for the myriad of guitars you see on stage.

+1 on the alternate tunings, also a guitar setup for slide will generally have higher action then one that you might chord all the time.

In addition, people seem to play differently on different guitars, maybe due to the neck size, scale, action, weight, etc. And yes different pickups sound different, at least that is my excuse for having G.A.S.

Horses for courses I guess.

Finally, it is fun to grab a different guitar mid set, all the gear junkies in the audiance always approve,

I use a Tele for alternate tunings and a Les Paul for some tunes.
But usually it is a Strat.

One other thing is: it looks cool. A gig is one of the only places where they can show off their instrument bling. Also true one might swap guitars due to type of music as well and has been mentioned.

The simple answer would be "yes" to all of the above. I own a couple of strats, one SSS and one ssh as well as a LP Studio. I tend to you the SSS strat for our first set as most of the songs require a cleaner sound. Second set however is a completely different beast. Usually I use the LP due to the nature of the songs, more hard rock with lots of gain. The LP delivers what the strat struggles to put out for the second set, vise versa, the LP is way too hot for the first set.
But in all honesty, its my humble opinion that you can never have enough guitars. :D

In that case, I wonder if a Clapton Stratocaster with its 25db variable midboost would serve your needs :?:

No Clapton Strat ever sounded like a Les Paul to my ears.

Nor to mine. I've EQ'd an amp to my Clapton at full midboost, and then substituted the LP without any changes, and the LP will blow the windows out. But the Clapton is another variable voice which came to mind given Socal's observations.

I'm actually switched from a blues to a country band myself. Usually, you don't want two or more guitarists using the same guitar setups because you want them to be distinctively different in sound to "fill" up what you hear. Tele's are really big for lead solo work, and Les Pauls are excellent for the newer heavy rock tone you hear. But in a nutshell, I use different guitars for different songs all the time.... When you really know what you guitars can do, you can start to decide what sounds better to your ears with the band. Mid frequencies are the most combative as there are many instruments including the vocalist all competing to be heard.

Just another reason I'm akin to try the new deluxe roadhouse with the built in preamp and six selector switch. Add to that the S1 switch that was added to eliminate the preamp all together.....sounds very interesting. Can't wait to try one out.
As for the Clapton strat, it would be nice to be able to bypass the boost with a S1 switch.......hmmm. Somebody please snap me out of it before I spend money I don't have..

Consider yourself slapped. Now to a bit of history. The first concept for the Clapton circuit was to have a mini-toggle switch to cut the preamp in and out. There are early adverts with the guitar so equipped. That was scrubbed on Eric's request that the preamp be on all the time, thus the jack activated circuit. However, the 1990 35th Anniversary Stratocaster does have that toggle switch in its circuit. You'll find a pic of one on the last page of the Strat Plus thread just above.
