Looking to add a greasebucket circuit and a Tone-split (one cap value for neck-mid and a different value on the bridge) to my strat. It's already got the tone wired so that Tone 1 affects the Neck and Mid while Tone 2 affects the Bridge. I looked up wiring diagrams to see how to work the two together, but found a slight discrepancy in the two:

Image
This shows the bridge pickup tone control mod with the tone split mod - the two caps in the diagram would be of different values. This is the first of the two mods I would make, a simple addition of caps. In this diagram the wire joining the neck and mid on the 5way connects to the middle lug of Tone 1.

But in this diagram, the same wire (or what would be that wire if this diagram included the BPTC mod) connects to the left lug of Tone 1.

Does this matter, does this affect the circuitry? I'm looking to construct a diagram that includes Tone 1 for neck/mid, Tone 2 for Bridge, separate capacitor values for each tone pot, and the greasebucket circuitry. If anyone has this diagram, or could throw one together for me, I'd certainly appreciate it. Or if someone can give me pointers in constructing it myself, that would certainly work as well.

I'm also not entirely sure what the current wiring on my strat is - it's been a while since I peeked under the hood. I'm hoping to desolder the trem claw ground next time I change strings and pull out the whole assembly for photos and to see what my current wiring is.

Thanks!

I pulled out my pickguard tonight and went ahead with both modifications. Both seem to have worked - my bridge pickup, where I switched the cap from .022 to .047, sounds a little darker with the knob the whole way down, and the greasebucket seems to have worked wonderfully on both knobs. This is my first venture into electronics so I'm pretty happy with the results.

The only problem: my bridge tone control now works in reverse. I believe (the pickguard is back on now and it's bedtime so I can't say for sure) that, with the pot lugs pointing up towards the volume pot, the left lug connects to the 5way, the .1 ohm resistor links the left and center lug, and the right lug connects the right lug to the .047 cap and the resistor and then to the base of the pot. Can I rectify the situation by simply switching the connections on the left and right lugs?

Thanks again!

Do you subscribe to Premier Guitar magazine, or follow their website? Your schematics look like Dirk Wacker's stuff. He is definitely someone to consider as a consultant.

Good eye, that's where I got the diagrams. I improvised my wiring scheme given the current positioning of my wires and the inconsistencies in these two diagrams. Unfortunately according to his site, singlecoil.com, he's on vacation until the 17th, so I was hoping one of the Fender forum's resident gurus could point me in the right direction

You might be doing both yourself and Dirk a favor and waiting until he returns. There might be something that either one of you did not account for. That'd be a learning experience for both. There's no arguing the level of background knowledge and expertise that can be brought to bear from this membership. You'll wind up with several ways to a resolution. What you really ought to do is explore your initial source first. You might even wind up in his column with an honorable mention for 'neatness, clarity and aptness of thought'. [Please don't ask about that....if you do get it, your as old as the hills with me. If you don't, the explanation takes far too long. I often write for the 'depends' generation among us. ]

I just switched my American Standard to a Highway 1 maple neck and a Highway 1 pickup assembly.
It had the Hot Alnico 3s which I changed the magnets to Alnico 5s
It had a Atomic or Hot Rod humbucker and it came with a Grease Bucket.
Its pretty cool and sounds really good both distorted and clean now
Anyway this is it and its one of my favs.
