I am a new forum member. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. The studio I work at owns am Eric Johnson Sig. Strat, which is awesome, but out of my price range. My favorite thing about it is the neck. Are there any other Strats that have the same neck thickness and taper with a Rosewood fretboard?

What is a compound radius?

Ok, first the radius...

Radius is really just how round the fretboard is. The EJ (I love mine!) has a 12" radius which is fairly flat. Other strats have 7.5" or 9" which are more rounded. A compound radius fretboard would be flatter in one area and move towards a rounder profile in another. The EJ neck is specially made for the EJ model. The back of the neck is a V shaped neck near the first fret and moves to a C shaped neck as you get closer to the body. I guess you could call that a compound profile.

You won't find that neck on any other strat though Fender does offer other models with the 12" radius. I believe the Deluxe Players strat has a 12" radius and a C shaped neck.

I guess you'll have to decide what it is you like about the EJ neck. Is it the flatter fretboard or the V shape at one end or the C shape at the other. Then just find a model that offers those preferences.

A compound radius is where the neck is somewhat conical in shape... say it starts at the 1st frett and 9.5" and ends up at 15" or 16" at the dusty end.

Guitars around a $500-$1000 price point w/ vintage-V necks would include the J. Vaughan ( got that spelled correctly) and the Buddy Guy Polka Dot.
There's also an American Deluxe V-neck and The Classic Player '50's which might fit your budget. You'd have to check the specs on fretboard material. The Vaughan, and Guy are maple.

Good hunting.

Doc.

The neck on the deluxe player indeed has a 12" radius.

The shape of the back of the neck however has no relationship to a compound radius. Compound radius (more accurately radii) are found on the face, or front of the neck.

And just to be absolutely clear, I'm right in believing the EJ does not have a compound radius fingerboard, does it?

Do any stock Fenders have compound 'boards, does anyone know? That's more a Parker kinda thing, isn't it?

No, the EJ does not have a compound radius neck. It's a 12" radius all the way up and down the neck.

^^^ yes, that looks really interesting... certainly within my price range. Sonic Blue with classic headstock - yummy - wish it had maple neck but this is definitely on my "next guitar" list.

The 60's players in sonic blue with the rosewood in a great guitar. Buddy has one. Plays great, sounds great, looks great. And I love the rosewood necks on strats. Much warmer sounding and feeling to me.
