Picked up a 1991 '57 reissue Fender Strat last night. The body shows many signs of use. The neck is losing some of it's finish and has some slight chipping along the bottom edge. The pickguard is cracked, along with one of the pot knobs. The guitar is loaded with a Seymour Duncan STK-S1N. The tuning pegs appear to be original. Should I do anything to this guitar? Is there anything I absolutely should not do? If anyone have any additional input or thoughts, I would appreciate it.

That tone pot seems to date to the first week of 1991.

Thanks guys. Is there a database or some type of list with pot code data?

Hi Guys I want to buy this stratocaster, as you can see it's CIJ 2004-05 the neck is definitely vintage (reissue) I've done as much research as I could but haven't not found which model it can be, body doesn't match neither '50 reissues nor '62 because on these models pick-guard holes are less and the top screw must be in the middle between the neck and middle pickups, 68 version has different type of neck top, if it's standard then the machine heads should be different, I also was not able to find out how many vintage starats Japanese have reissued to compare them to this one, I'm really confused, please give me some advice, the only thing that comes to my mind is that this guitar is built from different parts or maybe it is a custom? in addition I think that pickups are not the same color compared to each other, not talking about the knobs. In addition I have not seen this color anywhere else except here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-stratocaster-JV-St-65-Custom-Color-blue-green-/130481721094?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_146&hash=item1e61510f06 But again this one has the screw in the middle.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Nick.

The finish color appears to be what Fender-Japan calls "Old Lake Placid Blue" (OLB) but to my knowledge was only applied to their Premium Vintage '65 re-issue Strat (I own one). It's possible that someone has pulled a mix-and-match, mating a '62 neck to a '65 body -- the pickguard is definitely not a '62 style with that mis-located screw. That might also account for the hodge-podge of differently-colored pickup covers. You might wish to disembowel this guitar before purchase to ascertain the pedigree of its innards.

Thank you so much for your reply, I cannot check the guitar because it's online shopping, I've requested additional info from the seller and have received no answer yet, so I really agree with you, thanks again.

Looking at the first guitar, what are those red balls in the tremolo?

Other than a good cleaning, I wouldn't do a thing to that guitar. The fretboard needs some light brushing to get all that gunk off next to the frets...

Personally, I'd Gorgomyte the frets and very carefully glue any pickguard cracks at the screw hole. Then I'd play it, a lot.

replace the scratch plate or glue the broken bit back on, clean the frets up and play the hell out of her.
