I love my EJ. I have it set up perfectly (for me!), but when bending the high E it's fretting out when I bend past a full step. I've tried adjusting the height of the saddle, but it doesn't make a difference until the string is uncomfortably high (over 1/16" at the 12th). My Tele is set up the same, the strings are actually a smidge lower, and there are no bending problems. Weird, since the flatter radius of the EJ should make bending easier. Any insights?

Have you checked that the neck bolts are tight. This may sound crazy but if you can torque them a bit (say 1/8 to 1/4 turn), this should create a bit more space in the higher registers.

I can't get anywheren near that 1/16" at the 12th figure but mine have not been professionally setup. I think I'm running about 70 to 80 thou.

I'm really suprised. I have an EJ and that flat fretboard doesn't let me fret out even with 2 step, Dave Gilmour, bends. It might be a neck relief issue.

check you string height at the nut on your high E string. if it's too low there, that can cause a fret-out issue when you bend hard. and as the other guys mentioned, check your neck relief as well. and if neither of those are the culprit, it unfortunately could be from a high fret or frets. does the E string only fret out on certain frets? or does it basically fret out all over the place? if it's only on certain frets, it's more than likely a fret height issue. if it's all over the place, it could potentially still be a bad fret job issue [but sort of doubtful], but i would say that the problem probably lies with the other options/problems mentioned above.

to check for high frets, look down the neck from the headstock and see if any of the frets look like they're higher than the others. if so, that's your problem. it's easily fixable by a pro guitar tech or luthier. it would just need a simple level and recrown [about $150]. but of course, if the guitar is new and not played much, i would contact the place where you purchased it and say that you have a warrantee issue. of course, if you're a gigging musician and you've played the crap out of the guitar, it might not be covered under warrantee. taking the guitar from home, to the outside elements, and then into the hot club 5 nights a week for a year straight can make frets come unseated if you live in a place with a ton of humidity or if you spill TONS of beer on the neck from night to night... but if that's not the case with you, i'd get it fixed under warrantee.

hope this helps.

I played with the setup A LOT this weekend. The neck doesn't have much relief, even when the truss rod is loose, so I ended up raising the strings a bit. Acutally, more than a bit, from about 1/16 to around 5/32. The feel is a little different, but there are 2 apparent benefits: the bending issue seems to have been rectified, and the guitar itself seems to be slightly more resonant. The string height seems slightly awkward right now, but then again, the neck of the EJ felt strange when I started playing it. Give it some time, and it will feel fine.

Thanks so much to all who chimed in, and have a great holiday!

It's funny how this was one of the things that EJ was trying to avoid by using the 12" radius... :D :D :D
