Soooo..I want to share my John Mayer Strat dilemma.

A couple of years ago I was in the market for a new strat, and was leaning towards an SRV sig series, but I hated how big the neck felt. I heard that Fender was releasing the JM so I went and tried one out, LOVED IT, went home with it that day. 6 or 7 months go by I was in a rut with my playing, for some stupid reason, I thought a new guitar would help and traded my JM strat for a 1962 American Vintage RI, I dug the sound in the store and thought I would like the smaller neck. It was cool for awhile, but started missing the JM strat sound and feel...Couldn't find one anywhere...Said forget it! I'll stick with what I have, and make it work for me. Two years later I still miss the JM. One day I was at my local GC and they had a JM, started playing it, notice it had a little buz but figured a setup would resolve it. Traded my 62 and finally got my JM back!!! Well I tried to get it setup and we just couldn't get the buzz out with out shimming the neck, obviously some sort of tress rod issue. GC has been great about the whole deal, they are ordering me a new JM but it could be weeks, and meanwhile they are letting me hang on to the bum one...But man I am so frustrated!!!! I wish I would have just kept the guitar to begin with...I guess my point is don't get guitar happy if you find the one that clicks, don't let it go just because there a new model.

I hear ya' - I did the same stupid thing with a Peavy Cirrus 5-string bass in wenge. The sound was mind boggling but it developed a small imperfection on the neck. I could have lived with it but the dealer sent me another and although the neck was perfect, it was a different animal altogether!

Then it's a good lesson learned. But, to go even further...

Don't get rid of something you already have and like. Save and go boy ANOTHER guitar, don't ditch what already works for you.

I find when I'm in a rut it usually isn't the guitars fault. It's easier (and cheaper!) to just put the guitar down for a week and come back to it fresh.

You are absolutely right . If I had learned that lesson years ago I would have an impressive collection and not all of them cost too much, but I sure do miss them.

Exaclty. Or, I'll play only bass for a while. Or, just learn some different rhythms on the bongos, or something.

Taking a complete break is always good and I usually come back stronger and fresh too. Sometimes I'll just try to learn something completely different that I'm used to, different style or something.

[quote="JAM76"]Soooo..I want to share my John Mayer Strat dilemma.

First JM I ever auditioned off the wall had so poorly finished fret ends I actually emailed the company wondering why they would send an Artist series instrument out in that fashion.

Though I favor V-necks, I've never been able to feel comfortable with either the SRV, JM, or EJ guitars. It's truly anatomic...particular to the angle my thumb makes with my index finger on my left hand.

When the American Deluxe was marketed I was hoping for a V-neck option. I was told it was not to be. I wrote to Bill (rest in peace) in protest, and then ordered my CS strat. Next season...a V-neck in the Deluxe and me waiting for a new guitar.

Now I'm biding my time for a V-neck in both the new AmSt'd and the VG.

Doc.

Yeah usually do that myself, but for what ever reason, or mind-frame I was in at that time I thought I needed a new guitar and there was no stopping me.

It sucks but... patients is a virtue
