Just played the "New" American Vintage '65 Strat in a music shop in Portland, OR. What amazing tone. Every pick-up combination, clean, dirty, and heavy distortion was mind blowing. I have a 2001 Am Standard Strat, I love the way it plays, but don't like the pick-ups. I have heard good things about the Custom Shop '69 Strat pick-ups. Are they the same as the ones in the New Am Vintage '65 Strat I just played? The website describes the pick-ups in the '65 Strat as "American Vintage Grey Bottom Single Coil Strat" pick-ups. Please help!!

I too have played the new '65 AVS Strat.

And I own a set of CS '69 pickups.

There's little sonic correlation between them and what's in the new re-issue '65 guitar.

Until someone can measure those pickups, we won't know which, if any, of the pickups Fender sells are close to them in spec.

The 57/62 pickups are listed at 5.6 K ohms, the 69 pickups are 5.8 K ohms, the Fat 50s and Texas Specials are hotter, into the 6Ks ... check the specs at pickups under the Accessories link at the top of the page.

Thanks. It's been difficult to find a guitar with the CS '69 pups. The '60s player Strat has pretty good sounding pups but I know they are not the same as the CS '69s. I have been told the CS do sound better, no surprise. But when I played the NAV '65.....WOW, is all I can say. I can't justify spending $2K just for new pick-ups, but you never know. The search continues.

Did you play the NAV65 and your AmStd through the same amp to compare the pickups? That would give you a clue as to whether the NAV pickups are lower or higher output. If want to try to get the same sound out of your AmStd, you might be able to get close by lowering or raising the pickups. If you had to buy new pickups, maybe the 57/62s or the Texas Specials, depending on the lower or higher thing.

If I had to bet, I would bet lower and that the 57/62s are the way to go. They are some of my favorite Strat pickups too.

No, I did not have my guitar to try against the NAV '65. I did try lowering the pickups in my guitar, but still...not what I'm looking for. I'll look into the 57/62. Thanks.

I just wanted to add my two cents and say that the CS 69 pickups are really worth having. I got a Highway One Strat and put some CS 69's in it, and it was like a whole different guitar! There's a lot of detail in the sound you get from them - that's the best way I can describe it.
