Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of advise and some ideas, I've recently purchased a Fender FSR American Special Honeyburst hand stained finished (maple neck) and I was wondering what products would be best to take care of it. For Example what would be best to keep the body in good shape. What would be good for the neck, is fastfret worth it etc?

thanks

j.

I don't know what to recommend, but I do suggest you do it fast. I've had my fsr honeyburst strat since November of 2012 and the nitro is already wearing off where my arm touches and the back is all scratched up. The finish is super thin.

However I like the finish worn because I can treat the guitar like a tool rather than a fragile piece of art. Also I would like to congratulate you for choosing such an awesome axe.

Anyways my only mod was staggered locking tuners (Fender/Schaller) and removing the string trees.

I wouldn't put Fastfret on the neck.

Thanks, I kinda knew it didn't go there but I'm very glad you pointed it out to me.

What are your suggestion for what I've asked?

@ TheMaxwell : Its great guitar my first fender stratocaster, I'm not planning any mods soon though I may swap the strap button for some locking ones, I'm not too worried about wear and tear through age and use I just don't ensure that its looked after in the best way that I can, which is why I'm asking for ideas of how people care for there guitars

I'm glad you still are please with yours, they look so good in the flesh don't they.

They do look awesome. The finish kind of reminds me of SRV's Lenny strat. Also, this was also my first real strat. And my first high quality guitar in general. Anyways, Straplocks are a must for sure, and I keep the neck tip top with some neck polish and some fret polish. Some nut sauce never hurts either, I would put a tusq nut in too, but the nut is finished in with the neck and I'm not comfortable slicing up the neck finish to get it out.

Just be careful with the fret polish, it can damage your neck finish if it makes contact with it. I usually block off the neck with painters tape when I do it but it should have a guide or something in the box to use.

Hi crabbeo, welcome to the Forum and congrats on a nice guitar.

For generally just keeping it clean there is nothing better than a regular polish up with good ol' hot breath and plenty of elbow grease with a dry cloth. That's good for any kind of finish.

If you feel you must use a product in a bottle then a proprietary guitar polish will be just fine. For example, Dunlop 65, or Fender Guitar Polish, or Martin Professional Guitar Polish are all good and safe on any type of lacquer. However, Martin are out to sell product and yet even they think simply wiping with a cloth is the best:

Enjoy that Strat.

Cheers - C
