I have a 1996 Custom Shop Strat (1960 model) and original hard shell case that I plan on trading for another guitar. Just wanted to get an idea of how much it's worth so the trade is fair. I've seen low and high numbers. I have the certificate of authenticity. Anywhere I can look this up to get an idea? Serial #: CN506XXX

Try ebay in the "completed" section. And remember, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I know I sound a bit draconian but that's a really good place to start. Elderly instruments is a good place to get an idea of the general amount. Good Luck

Thanks. I'll try Elderly Instruments. I tried ebay before. That's what led me to post here. Just wondering why one guitar is worth 3k and another 1k. For example I found this guitar in much worse condition than mine (relic'ed--haha) with a "buy it now" price of $2,500. Just wondering what exactly makes for the price differences (besides the obvious: year, woods, etc.) Maybe I'll contact fender and see exactly what the specs are for this guitar.

That guitar looks pretty sweet.

Start by asking like $5000. Come down if you can't get a deal. Be patient.

Hi there. The link you posted is for a rarer 1966 model.
Believe it or not closet classic and relic cost more than NOS.
Yours is a 1960. The gold trim adds value. Very nice.
Realistically as mentioned it is worth what someone at the time will pay. These go from around $1800 up to around $3000.
Try your luck and pitch somewhere between.
I know people will argue "hey but I see some for much more" and that is true and you will probably see them still for sale months later.
I do not have the guitar blue book but maybe some one else can pitch in. Remember these figures are all just a guide.
IMHO $2400 tops but tis not for me so it is not a strat I just have to have :D

Hey Sunshy, I do have the Blue Book of Electric Guitars, 2009, 12th Edition, but they're not buying any guitars. :D

Bearing that and what little info you've presented in mind, this is the listing that seems appropriate:

1960 Stratocaster (US Mfg. No. 010-6000/6010) offset double cutaway alder body, bolt-on lightly figured maple neck, 21-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, six-on-one-side tuners, vintage-style vibrato bridge, white aged pickguard, three Texas Special single coil pickups, three Aged Knobs (v, two tone), three-way switch, available in 3-Tone Sunburst, Black, Olympic White, or Custom Color finishes, mfg. 1992-98.

Sounds like yours?

98% Mint $1,650.....95% Exc $1,350.....90% Exc $1,100.....80% VG $950

add 10% for Custom Color finishes, add 10% for gold hardware (Model 010-6010)

Maybe $1,980 if Mint, four years ago, according to the book. In reality, follow the advice you've already received from forum members. It is a good looking guitar and somebody might have to have it.

Not many regular production Custom Shop models were valued much higher or lower, $200 more or less, until you get into the Limited Editions.

- Dan

Yeah, you might end up with about $2400, but if you don't try to fish for more, you certainly won't get more. Are you patient?

Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it. I just don't want to suffer from "Trader's Remorse." This might be sacrilege here, but I was thinking about trading it for a PRS McCarty. It's a nice guitar, but not a "10 top" or anything remarkable. I also have 2 other strats and a Tele so I may not miss this guitar. Just wanted to make sure that the McCarty was in the ballpark of the custom shop Strat--in case I wanted to trade/sell that later. Oh and, though I don't have many virtues, I am indeed patient ;)

Check:

Vintage Guitar Magazine

Gruhn Guitars

PRS McCarty's are kind of pricey, these days near or over $3K new and, I'm sure you know that it's apples and oranges when you compare these guitars. I owned 2 PRS's and swapped 'em out for Fenders because the PRS necks don't suit me. All my Strats, save for my Gilmour are v-necks. I trust you find the McCarty a comfortable player.

Indeed. I played one previously and rather liked it. Wish me luck. Here is the PRS:

That's a beautiful instrument. However, it looks like a Custom 22, not a McCarty. You're not going to get a case like that from Fender anytime soon, even in a Custom Shop guitar. [One of my major beefs with FMIC.] Back in '94 McCarty was my initial interest in PRS but the late Ed Roman, then of East Coast Music in Danbury, persuaded me to look at a CS24 bolt-on. It had a whale blue QMT and gold hardware.[Very rare for PRS on the wall] Of course, my wife being with me, the blue and gold combo was the clincher and the McCarty didn't go home. IMHO...If it looks to be a keeper, pull the trigger.

Pics say McCarty. McCarty has the coil tap on the volume knob correct? I'm going to do it. I think he's really looking forward to the strat. It's a nice instrument as well.

Don't know why I thought the McCarty was a single cut. Thanks.

You really have to check the completed listings as suggested to see what they have actually sold for, as an asking price is no indication of of the actual selling price. Note that the '66 linked-to above didn't sell and was re-listed.

sunshy - that's definitely a McCarty. The McCarty and Custom 22 look alike from the top; the differences are that most McCartys have the vintage tuners, a thinner headstock (with a steeper angle), and a thicker body. Custom 22s have whatever locking tuner PRS was using at that time (plus there was a brief period around 2000 or so where they used modern-style non-locking tuners in the wrap tail Custom 22s).

Easy source of confusion - when their Singlecut model first was introduced they used pictures of old Ted in the ads and used a truss rod cover that said "McCarty" on it for a brief period of time; the "McCarty" part was pretty quickly dropped and it was just called the Singlecut until they decided to have 2 models with different scale lengths (that was a few years after the Gibson lawsuit was settled).
