Looking at the HSH strats. I'm guessing the pickups are different but I'm not sure there are any other major differences. The chrome covers on the blacktops are sexy. Other than that I'm not sure what is different between the two.

Anything about the blacktop that should make me go for it over the modern player? (And I haven't found either locally.)

The Blacktop is MIM, while the Modern Player is MIC. IMO, the MIM are better quality, especially the electronics.

The big issue I've seen with my Modern Player Jag is that the finish is kinda second rate.

Soo.... $50 for better electronics and a better finish. That seems like it might be worth it.

Titanium Silver or Black? If I'm going to go for the better finish I should get the Sonic Blue one although it would cost me a pickup...

I hate buying guitars blind. (Viva Amazon's return policy.)

Those mahogany bodies of the MP are pretty heavy also (I had the Jaguar for a short time).

I like the black w/ MN better myself, although I got the HH. The Sonic Blue also looks nice. The pups in the HH are wonderful, both for clean and distortion. I assume that the HSH has the same pups, plus the single coil?

I tried both back to back a few weeks ago.

For me the modern player felt cheap, the fit and finish wasn't great and the action was sky high.

The black top felt like what I would expect a proper Fender to be.

Soundwise the blacktop also had the better pickups.

If it was my money I'd go blacktop.

Just for closure. I never did find a modern player to play. The blacktops were a mixed bag. I think it was just a matter of the demo models being beat to hell. I found a lovely sonic blue one with a great neck that I almost pulled the trigger on. In the end I managed to get a PRS SE Santana for under $400 so I bought that instead. If the PRS was closer to its normal price of $700 I'd have bought the blacktop.

Nice lineup now. 1993 Fender American Standard (with a 2013 neck), a Fender Modern Player Jaguar and the PRS. Traditional single coils MP-90s and humbuckers. That's a range of sounds. Switching between neck lengths is going to break my fingers.

I hope the new Coronado and Starcaster reissues don't have that problem.
