I picked up this awesome relic today. It is colloquially referred to as a "Servicemen Strat" named after the men who bought these during the Vietnam war. They were made in the Phillipines and I even found some interesting info on another blog somewhere. Check it out!

That sucks! The poor quality, and the fact that these morons put "Fender" labels on these POS, make me want to puke.

These instruments were quite popular with GI's serving in Southeast Asia but for the record, the military PX system in-country could (and did) order selected Fender guitars and amps to those willing to bear the wait, usually 3 to 4 months. I ordered a red Strat and a Pro Reverb amp in December of 1970 at the main exchange in Cam Ranh Bay, RVN and the order was delivered in March of the following year. A minor snafu occurred somewhere along the line and the Strat mysteriously became a Dakota Red Tele. Loath to wait further, I took it anyway. I played both for the remaining eight months of my tour then sold the set to one of my hootch-mates for exactly what I paid.

I arrived in Cam Ranh Bay. They put me to filling sand bags. It was hot, so I wandered off and found an air conditioned library. What were they going to do? Send me to Viet Nam? :P

Thanks for sharing that. It must have been a later one, cause usually you see them with a sort of Mustang trem.

What did you pay?

Anyone remember "lonely boy"?

"Lonely Boy" was a classic - I wonder if Vinny Pop moved overseas and is now working in a guitar factory in the Philipines?

Vinny always had some kind of scheme up his sleeve.

I'm not sure if he's rich and famous yet.

Much appreciated sir, but I accept it only on behalf of every veteran of all branches who served (or those GI's currently serving) the United States of America and who frequent this forum.

I miss Vinny.

remember how mad he was when I identified his guitar as a "Servicemen's Strat" and then it became the "very first fake Stratocaster" good times.

That said Vinny was quite a character, with a good heart. I wish him well.

When you guys refer to Vinny, are you talking about the Vinny Pop guy that was on the Forum from time to time? Speaking of Vets, my long time friend and accountant for my work is a Nam Vet (I was just a few year to young to serve). He is a paraplegic as he took a bullet in the spinal cord while carrying radio. Just two weeks ago he had a kidney transplant, as the one kidney he had started to fail. His sister donated. He is in recovery and is doing great. We hope he will be back to work soon. We send our thanks and prayers to all vets, especially as the Nam war was considered the war of disgrace. Many of these guys did not get the thanks they deserve, considering what they went through.
