The Deluxe Players is wired similarly.

I've long since given up on series switches and phase switches, they give a couple of useful tones but nothing that really approaches the sound of a real humbucker.

If you really want a humbucking sound from a Strat then fit a humbucker! Personally I like single coils just fine.

Thank you for your comments .... I agree that these mods have very few useful tones.... but sometimes you find a good one here and there ...at the end YMMV ..... I have a push pull pot on a loaded pickguard that I bought but I never use it.. it just sounds weird. The best mod I've seen was the S1 switch.. I just didn't bond with the SCN's

Cheers

Premier Guitar runs a great series on mod wiring Strats and Teles. Check their archives.

I have done a series blender mod on my American Standard and I have to say that the bridge/middle in series is quite useful for getting some good heavy distortions sounds. But to tell you the truth, I haven't used it in over a year. As you said, the sound of a nice humbucker at the bridge (or even the single coil at the bridge) just cant be beat. While having two Strat pickups in series may give you a fatter sound, it just misses the bite and focus of the bridge position alone.

You can get a nice humbucker tone from all three pickups together.

The G&L Tribute I had last year was set up in a similar fashion. It sounded great. I'm experimenting with hotter and fatter toned bridge pickups from Vineham Custom Handwound Pickups these days. The one I currently have from them is great and I don't lose much, if any, of that sweet, sweet tone from position #2.

Thanks for the link though, this will come in handy eventually :)

I have to agree with Frank. I'd much rather just swap in a humbucker (or two) and not mess around with wiring up switches and such.

I don't mind single coils in Strats, but I also don't think they are sacred.

What???? Are you mad???....you have committed the unpardonable sin.....................just kidding. In fact, some of the single-coil sized humbuckers have a sound that more approaches a single-coil tone than what we tend to associate with humbuckers.

There are people who prefer a push-pull pot over the S1.

Easiest mod yet: Drop in a set of Seymour Duncan YJM Furys.
Best sound from a Strat I've found. Clear, articulate and lots of sustain without any annoying hum. They are stacked coils, so fit into standard single coil slot.

I have this mod since 1985 ..

Very versatile, not because of humbucker/non-humbucker tone ..

.. its a totally new dimension on any strat, period.

It gives you an option of playing all 3 pickups at once  , or bridge and neck only.
