The guy being Frank Glionna of The Music Gallery; I hope he gives you some information. By coincidence, I bought a guitar from there once, almost 30 years ago.

I couldn't make out the codes on the picture of your pots. Do you have those codes/dates?

I didn't write em down but after enlarging the pic it looks like
REG AUD 020#9 FS

On the foil of the guard there are a ton of finger prints. We may have to get CSI involved on this one.

Sorry I can't really help you with this one, but I'd like to say that that is a great looking guitar.

Thank you it is also a great player with great sound. But my concern is if it isn't a true prototype then it is either a parts guitar, I doubt it be counterfit but it could be a replacement neck from Master Builder John Cruz, thus explaining the lack of logo or original neck plate. If that is the case when I hear from Fender it is going back like a boomarang.

Here are some pics of a "pearl moto" set ... the case looks like yours.
I guess it dates from 1994.

It is a beautiful set. I have a friend who had one of those complete sets. See though that one has the American Standard Tuners. Mine has Slot Heads. Grrrrrrrrrr This is a very frustrating instrument.

And it has the American Standard (two-point) bridge.

Thta who axe is basically an American Standard, from tuners to bridge to pick guard. It is a sweet looking package though. I even like the stand.

Hello Moe,

That sure is a nice looking guitar you have there. We are still trying to contact Mr. Grom to see what he knows about this, but it appears to be a prototype of our Fender Special Run #26. That model ended up being produced in Teal Green Transparent instead. Only 60 of those were made for specific dealers. It’s hard to tell how many protoypes were made before it was decided to make a small run of the final version. In the event that yours is confirmed to be a prototype, it would not have been serialized.

Hi Moe,

This instrument is most definitely authentic.

In 2000 Fender’s main factory was working on an FSR (Factory Special Run) project to use a number of the Custom Shop’s white moto Strat bodies that remained from the Moto Amp/Strat/Case project a few years earlier. The majority of the units were done in Trans Teal and sold through the AIMM network of independent music dealers.

There were several moto bodies (I don’t remember exactly how many) that were done in some different colors and submitted to our Marketing Dept for their evaluation. I’m pretty sure there were two red ones and one cherry sunburst that we painted as samples. My department was involved with preparing the sample so that’s why my name appears in the pickup pocket …. This way the Paint Dept knew who to contact when it was completed.

At that time, J. Black (former Custom Shop Master Builder) was working in my department and he put the Marketing samples together. J. gathered an assortment of parts from various sources for these samples and often used non-standard combinations, since the units were only intended as cosmetic samples. He easily could have gotten a neck from the Custom Shop prior to the Custom Shop decal being installed and a random neck plate with no serial number. I have a note in my files that one of the red moto samples went to our Marketing Manger at the time out in our Scottsdale office Marketing and the AIMM people finally decided that their run of moto units would be Trans Teal and their order used up all the remaining moto bodies.

Once the red moto sample left the Corona facility I have no idea of its final disposition …. It easily could have been sold off by our people in Scottsdale .

I hope this information is helpful and please feel confident that what you have is the real thing …. Just a little unique.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

All the best,

STEVE GROM

Vice President, Quality Assurance

Okay!
So it sounds to me like a partsocaster put together by Fender's Marketing Department (which explains the pickguard/screw thing) using Custom Shop parts. It's certainly got a custom paint job!

A Factory Special Run prototype ... whose color wasn't eventually used for the run. Are you going to hang onto it?
