On this thread I want to show a few of the custom Strat Plus' I have put together this summer. Some interesting guitars that kind of stand out from your ordinary Strats. To start out with the guitar below is a 1997 Strat Plus DX that has now been customized. I actually had a thread two years ago where I step by step built a Strat Plus almost exactly like this one. (Rats, I forgot to pop in the whammy bar! )

The humbucker is a DiMarzio Air Classic. They say it has 1950s humbuckers tone, but they didn't want to simply imitate them by using Alnico 2 or “aged” Alnico 5 magnets. They have what is called an "Airbucker" technology that was designed to capture all of the best sonic qualities of vintage humbuckers while avoiding the technical problems. The pickup has the same sweet sound as a classic humbucker, but the technology permits us to use a more reliable full-strength Alnico 5 magnet and still reduce string-pull to increase sustain and sensitivity. Since it has a 4-leads I was able to add and extra mini-switch (upper one) to split the coils on the pickup to give it a bit more of a single coil sound. Amazingly, this guitar has quite a bit of quack in positions s 2 & 4.

Image

The pickguard (Scratch Plate for some of you on the other side of the pond!) is Black Pearl. The middle and bridge pickups are Chrome Dome Lace Sensors. The bridge is running hot (like Red Lace Sensors) at 12.2k. the 5-way is a single wafer super-switch so I can have position #3 be the neck with bridge pickups together like on any 2 pickup guitar, such as a Telecaster. The mini-switch is an on/on/on type and gives several variations for the bridge Dually pickup. Here's what it does (and remember too, that these settings can be mixed with the other pickups in Positions #2 & #3). Up)]splits off the back pickup, so since the distance is farther away from the bridge, it creates a cool Strat hollow sound, which then can be mixed with the middle pickups with the 5-way switch. Middle) has the bridge pickups in parallel creating a hot humbucker sound. Down) splits off front pickup on the bridge to give a Strat single coil bridge sound.

More to come!

Very nice work, as always my friend.

Also nice to see your site come up when doing a web
search for Strat Plus.

Just beautiful, thanks for sharing. Other than the creative Pickup combinations, Switching possibilities and Pickguard choices, I've always admired the pristine body finishing on your builds, that really sets your guitars apart.

Keep 'em coming! :)

Here is another one I just finished up in July. It is a NOS 1997 Strat Plus DX that is in a Natural finish with a solid Ash body. Love the maple neck on this finish. I mistakenly said the black one had a Alnico II pickup in it when it really had the DiMarzio Air Classic! It is this guitar that has the Seymour Duncan APH-1n Alnico II Pro humbucker which Duncan says is a warm, moderate-output neck position humbucker that's great for jazz, blues, classic rock and slide. They go on to say, "The Alnico 2 magnet and moderate windings yield a warm, sweet tone with more natural string vibration for great sustain. Classic rock players who get their distortion from the amp rather than the pickup love the APH-1."

The rest of the pickups on this is just like the black Plus shown at the start of this tread. The extra mini-switch is to split the Alnico II Pro humbucker also like on the Black Strat.

By the way, no one said anything about the issue with the black Strat. Look at the tone knobs! I must have been up too late that night when I popped those on! Had the Tone on the volume and visa versa!

More to come!! :D

My '97 American Standard had that finish with a rosewood board. I dropped the EMG DG-20 pre-wired Moto pickguard into it. Guitar looked great. That finish was LTD on my guitar that year. Don't know if it was so for the Plus series. But I got a Plus series case out of the deal because the vendor did not have a regular case for me.

Gorgeous guitars :P

If you plan build another custom creation pick a backrouted quilted maple top body from Warmoth and get rid of the pickguard. Drop in the same configuration used on the current builds, put a Mini Floyd bridge with LSR Nut & Locking Tuners and throw in some LP knobs!

Yummy..... Especially the clear wood grain..... That has always been my favorite Strat look, ever since I saw the poster " Fender, The Favorite Flying Machine " as a kid.... I have one form the 70's somewhere at my Mom's, but finding where it's stored is akin to an archaelogical dig..... ( Me Mum does have a few things ..... )

Very Nice Xhefri.... But a relic from your hands.... sounds very interesting ....
I have to get going on my projects, as soon as school starts I will be able to make a schedule.....

Ok, I have done several of these types of Strat Plus'. I finished up this 1995 Strat Plus with Maple fretboard around May and tucked it away. It has a Burgundy Lace Sensor in the neck, Silver in the middle and a Purple/Red dually in the bridge. Of course, this is wired like a Fender Strat Ultra with the exception I have the TBX on the middle and Dually pickups and the 1st tone control on the neck pickups. For some reason Fender had the TBX wired to all the pickups and the 1st tone control on the neck at the same time. So there was 2 tone controls on the neck! ummm.

This guitar sure plays sweet. Low action and has that "feel" to it.

Those chrome humbuckers look real sharp on those geetars.

I'm doing well, Mr X! Yes, would be nice to get a group together
for a meet 'n' greet/jam/BBQ or something.

I met Doc last summer, just missed Ceri 2 or 3 years ago. Might be hooking up with Frank (FrankieTheKid) over the upcoming holiday weekend.
