For a second guitar would you prefer a Gibson Les Paul or a Gibson SG?

I was ... just wondering ... in the seventies and eighties we had to have an LP ... don't know about how things are now, probably people would vote PRS or something else? Your comments are appreciated

Had a Les Paul Custom long ago.... It's weight drove me to Fender..... As for the SG I always have had problems with the neck to body joint.... It has always been the weak point. But I do/did always like the tone of a Les Paul mated to a small vintage tube amp....

I would consider a Les Paul over the SG nevertheless....

I never spent much time with an SG, so I can't comment on it as a 2nd guitar.
A Strat and Les Paul pairing is classic.

I had an SG for a while, but traded it off for a Strat. Didn't feel right to me, and the balance was off. If you let go of it, the neck would dive bomb. No I prefer my strats, for a 2nd option, I might consider a Fender Jaguar, or Mustang, but thats just MHO.

Got rid of all but one Les Paul from my collection. I only keep it for tone difference as I would prefer to play a three hour gig with Fenders... Because I love them and they don't break your back after an hour.

Anyway like I said I keep the LP around for the tonal variance, because some songs sort of just don't sound right to me without it.

So one LP in your pile is not going to hurt

I've owned a few Gibby LP's over the years but I sold my last one a little over a month ago and doubt at this point I'll ever buy another Gibson. Never say never, and I've likely said it before and been wrong, but their QC and build quality overall vs the price point of their guitars to my mind has really hit the bricks. While I loved the look of my latest honeyburst (great color for an LP) it had a bunch of small faults that I just plain couldn't overlook and honestly I'll play a humbucker-equipped Strat over an LP these days every time.

Having said that, if you must have a Gibson to go with your Fender, the LP to me is the classic match, and while they're heavier than sin in comparison to the SG or a Fender, there's something cool about slinging one. SG's - and this will only be my worthless opinion - are an ugly shape and despite a pretty good history in the rock and roll world, not nearly the to the level of a Les Paul in the market. Try and find a good Studio, maybe even one of the new LPJ models, otherwise you could be a little shocked at the bang for the buck. Again, just my opinion for what it's worth... likely not much.

The Gibson Firebird is really poorly balanced too. I have an Orville by Gibson version and I use the old cowboy style strap on it : that's where the bottom of the strap is attached to the bottom strap button like normal and the top of the strap is attached up at the headstock. That would probably work for the SG too.

I've never owned an SG. But against all my instincts a couple I've tried in recent years I really liked. The necks felt excellent, which seemed odd because it does not compute with my other tastes. But there ya go; can't judge a book by its cover, I guess.

Les Pauls are just great. An obvious partner to a Strat.

Along with a Tele, of course. And a 335. And... and...

Oh dear: so many guitars, so few hands.

Cheers - C

And the MIJ Orville by Gibson LPs have gotten pricier and harder to find. Other Japanese LP copies are being kept out of the USA (some of those were great guitars, like Tokai, etc). I hesitate buying an Epiphone, MIC, but I hear their quality is quite good now.

Have you thought about a Tele? I own a Les Paul, a '61 SG Reissue, a 335, and I still consider my Esquire my second go to guitar when I need something besides my Strat.

Just a thought.
