Hi, I've got American Standard Stratocaster 2013, and after neck relief fixing (don't know in which direction) and string change it started to sound a bit blurry like with decreased tone or so. Strings were Original Bullets 3150 LR, now they are Super Bullets 3250 L.
In general, in which way the action, neck relief, pickup height affect the tickness of sound.

I want to get my loud fat electric sound with a bit sharper picking, how to get it back?

You need to be more carefull when working on guitar

Neck to much curve ; strings are too far from the pickups = less volume , "better ? " strat tone

Neck too straight ; strings are too close from the pickups = tone change in worst

Better to do a complete setup as you can read in SUPPORT . This page right up side.

Hi inteloid: hmm, tricky.

Like stratele52 say, a good solution is to do your own setting up so you know what has been done and why, and can reverse it if necessary. However, from what you say this work was done by a tech? Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it's a nice idea always to find out exactly what work has been done: most will tell you without asking and nobody should mind you questioning them in detail about it (though perhaps some do - which might be a warning sign).

It seems doubtful that a relief tweak would change the guitar's tone noticeably. It is true that some advanced luthiers believe that an absolutely straight neck gives a more resonant response than one with a bit of relief in it - but these are small, small differences if you can even hear them at all. And in any case, if the relief is now correct it means it was not ideal before, and so the adjustment was presumably the right one. I think it's improbable that this is the problem, though we can't be sure.

Assuming the tech is a good one, that is. Impossible to second guess him on that over the internet.

There's so many things that can affect how a guitar feels and sounds we'll be lucky to solve this sight unseen. But assuming you like how the relief and action now feel then they are likely to be more or less right, so perhaps the next thing to look at is pickup height. Has this been changed? If the pickups are noticeably higher or lower than before then that could well be the issue. Otherwise, try switching back to the previous model of strings and see if that sorts it.

Those are the first obvious things to think about.

Many players keep a note of precise measurements of how they like relief, action, bridge float and pickup height, exactly so they can check these things, and also so they can best inform a tech of what they want. If you didn't before, it's time to start.

Does any of that get us anywhere?

Cheers - C

Thanks for your reply.

The pickup height was the issue, I've put them lower and the tone is back now.

No buzz, just pickups are lowered, strings are in the same position.
