Most of you have seen my Highway 1

Image

When I was placing the order for a new pickguard for my Jazz Bass I decided I wanted to re-work my Highway 1 again. I ordered an Elite Stratocaster pickguard. The Elite had 3 on/off switches instead of a 5 way switch for pickup selection. There are a couple of wiring schemes I want to try out on it too. I'll post pics and details when it is done.

Hey Chet,

I previously owned one of those Elite's
for about 25 years. Still a bit suprised that
those botton switches never caught on----
every pickup option at the push of a button.

Best of luck on your project
I'm looking forward to the photos.

Cheers.

I'm surprised about it too. I find it interesting so that's why I'm trying it.

I'm still confused, so are the "elite" designs limited to just the pickguard, or are the pots/knobs different?

I am looking to install new pots in my guitar this following week with my texas specials (Also going into my Highway One guitar), and I have a push/pull pot I'm going to use for the bridge so I can get 7 different combinations while still using the 5 way switch. But if this elite design is better, what kind of pots does it use?

I am installing 500k Dimarzio custom taper pots --What does custom taper mean?

I'll be using 3 mini on/off toggle switches and 3 CTS 250k audio taper pots (1 vol., 2 tone).

I have not looked to see how the original Elite's were wired.

Hi Chet – I trust you’ll be keeping us posted on that Elite switch mod. Some of us would be most interested to see under the hood on that one… Good luck, Sir.

By the way, for those asking why this kind of switching isn’t more widely used, perhaps a glance at this vid of Thomas Blug (who may be new to some of you) will provide a partial answer. Keep an eye on what his fingers are doing with his selector switch, often right in the middle of passagework, especially near the beginning and end. Not possible with more fiddly switches.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdTZFAMxDdc

Sometimes we think we want the full encyclopaedia of conceivable tones available on our guitar. Other times, we just want two or three great and distinctive tones, easily selected.

Occasionally wish my SSSs could do all three pups on together on position 3, though. My S-1 HSS can, and it’s a useable sound…

After some thought last night I have decided to go with 3 on/off/on (in phase/off/out of phase) toggle switches and 3 250k/500k Concentric pots (this will give 3 vol/3tone pots).

Wow! That's the encyclopaedic approach all right!

We're going to want to see pictures and hear a comprehesive selection of sample sounds, you know that, don't you?

The soldering might be only the beginning of the work on this one! :D

Best of luck.

STEL-3500 under "Strat" ... very cool... I've heard of this model but have never seen one... your's looks really clean!... I wonder why you would need the 5-way or 3-way if you had a separate on off for each p/up?
