Hey y'all. I'm new here. Just trying to find a ballpark estimate of the value of a Squier Strat I bought new, years ago. The serial number is SQ08217. I know it was made from 1983 to 1984, but that's about the only info I can find. Can any one help ?

Hey thetedster1, welcome to the Forum!

While I am not an expert on MIJ guitars, I do know a little about them. Some of the very first Made in Japan Fenders carried the Squire name. Most were around late 1982 to early 1984. The were the precursor to the whole MIJ line of reissues and contemporary models of guitars. Most of these carried JV and SQ serial numbers. The SQ Squier series was introduced in late 1983 to early 1984 and was based more on 1970s Fender models. Some also had USA made pickups installed. Some people, who know the history look at some of these as collectible. They should never be equated to the line of Squier guitars made in other countries such as Korea, China and Indonesia.

To answer your question directly, if marketed properly in the right venue I've seen them sell as high as $600 - $700. And then I have seen some sell for around $350 due to the fact they were mistakenly equated to the "other" Squier series. The history of the Squire guitars is quite confusing and some good research has been done here: http://planetbotch.blogspot.com/2011/12/truth-about-1980s-squier-strats.html

Any pictures of your guitar your can post?

I remember when those first MIJ Squiers came out. It was clear that Fender wanted to reclaim the part of the market that was buying the Japanese Strat copies, you know, those made by Univox, Greco, Hondo, etc.

They weren't for me (I wanted MIA guitars), but they were as good as the best copies of the time.
