I've noticed several threads on here about guys suddenly losing sound in several switch positions on their American Deluxe Strats. Yesterday it happened to me.
I plugged in and I only have a full signal on the neck pickup. It works with both the S1 engaged or not engaged. I have a very faint signal on the other four pickup positions, but seriously I can just barely hear anything.
The bypass button that sends the full signal to the humbucker works fine.
This guitar gets very little play time, so I'm a bit surprised by this. My first thought is a ground problem, but since the neck position works, that doesn't seem real likely.
When I have a chance I will pull the pickguard and check the solders and hope I find something easy to fix. I hope I don't have to change out the super switch.
Anyone that has had this problem, could you post what you found. I'm talking about my '10 American Deluxe HSS. Thanks.

Problems with the S-1 switching system are legendary though having two guitars so equipped, I've never personally experienced any. You may have to "open the hood" and check the wiring configuration with a DVM. If there's an issue with the switch, the meter will tell you.

I'm preparing for surgery as I type. Do you think it could be the S1 switch even though it works fine in one position? I'll check everything as best I can. I sprayed cleaner down into the 5 way and it had no effect.

The S-1 switch is a pretty complex device -- it wouldn't surprise me.

Believe it or not, that's probably the cause of the problem. A lot of the time pots and switches develop crackles and buzzes through being left in one position for a long time. The volume pot on my preamp is very prone to this, it always stays in the same position and the one time a year I decide to move it, it sends a horrible crackle through the speakers.

Spray some electrical contact cleaner in there, rattle the switch/pot backwards and forwards a few dozen times and it'll be good as new.

Bingo! I opened up the pick guard and checked all the solder connections. No obvious problems. I squirted the 5 way at the contact points, no change. I squirted down into the S1 switch and a gush of black stuff erupted out. I gave it a few more good shots, screwed the pg back on and put a couple of strings on, plugged it in and I can hear noise.
Now to put a new set of strings on, hope it doesn't start buzzing, and turn the noise into music.
I used plastic safe contact cleaner, but it took the gold lettering off of the volume knob. So now my guitar is officially relic'd. :)

Testors gold enamel hobby paint (in the little square bottles) is a pretty good match for the color that Fender uses. Apply with a 000-brush, allow to dry thoroughly, then wipe away any excess paint from the skirt and/or the top by gently buffing the surface with a slightly moist Q-tip (spit works well here).

Glad your switch is now operating correctly -- they're a real sumbitch to replace.

Rawk on!

That doesn't sound good. Unless you struck oil and are now rich.

I've never been a fan of the Deluxe model ... Mostly because of the fret markers.

Thanks Arjay, I'm going to give that paint a try. A little honest wear doesn't bother me, but since this guitar is still like brand new at this point, I think I'll try to spruce up the knob.
Orville, what is it about the fret markers you don't like?

He dislikes the pearloid dots.

Not sure if he prefers the abalone markers of the previous models. :?
