Hi all,

I'm new to the forums as far as posting, but I have done a LOT of reading, both here & elsewhere. I would like to buy my husband a guitar for his birthday. (Yes, I know that he should really pick out his own to see what feels good to him, but this is the way I want to do it.). Now, he has told me that he had a Les Paul previously (no clue which model) and he said he did NOT like it. From what he says, it was a model that cost from $300 to $700, or so I inferred, so not a top of the line model. Now, he is such an 80's child that I know that he will want to play 80's rock. So my question is this: For a newbie to an intermediate (not sure of his REAL experience level), what guitar would be the better investment for his level and the type of music he will be playing? I'm leaning Fender MIM Strat & $500-1000 price range. Opinions? Thanks

Hi ttrevino42,

The MIM sounds like a great choice for the situation that you've described. A Standard Strat in HSS might be better than SSS for versatility, the hum-bucker for rock. In this case I would go with a Strat over a Tele for the comfort.

Suppress your preference, take him to the store, then let him pick his own poison. It's he who will be playing the instrument and coping with the ramifications of which guitar best suits him.

^^ I second the motion, not being a player yourself, you will not be able to guess what neck shape profile, fret size, nut size ( above the 1st fret ) this is quite important and it relates to finger lenght, thickness, dexterity, neck contour wether compound or vintage or modern.
Additionally, one HSS strat. is going to sound different than the next when plugged into the same equipment. Next is going to be the finish of the guitar, is it a cherry sunburst, a tobacco sunburt, a transparent crimson color ( Blue or Red ) or a solid color....
Rosewood, pauferro or maple fingerboard... Lacquer or Poly finish....

There really is nothing like the surprise of being taken to a music store and given a choice within of course your budget.... Set it up with a salesman at first, but do make sure the store and the salesperson are about the musical journey, not the retail only view...
A perfect guitar for one person is going to be a fail for another, this is the reason why picking an instrument for someone is difficult....

THe pickups and sound from a Tele, HSS Strat or SSS strat are all going to be very different requiring a different approach... All good as I have all three But....

That is akin to trying to compare an Audi S4 versus a BMW M3. both highly capable but very much a different driver for each....

BTW.... As far as 80's music......
Yingwie Malmsteen, Mark Knopfler both played Strats..... Elliot Easton, Chrissie Hynde, Played Tele's...... Ry Cooder played both...... Robert Cray, Eric Clapton play Strats....
Most of the 80's bands played a mix of all the above.... You really can play anything on any of these instruments... The key is great pickups and a great amp set-up..
Also when picking an electric guitar, an amp is 50% of that instrument combo's sound..
( Which is why they were called combo's way back when... )

Good Luck and have fun.....
