Hey guys! I'm relatively new to this forum! I used to use a squier strat and I just recently got my first american deluxe strat :D

Question is, what do I do with the old strat? I would want to keep it because it was my first ever guitar, but all the sounds just are better on the deluxe (the squier sounds more thin, slightly closer to a tele than a usual strat would be IMO, while the deluxe is rich), and the deluxe is more versatile with the S1.

I was considering modifying it to HSS or HSH but I already have a les paul standard to take care of my humbucking needs.

I'm not used to having many guitars, although my collection is growing, so I wanna ask, what do you guys with many guitars do?? To me it feels like a less better duplicate in my collection, which I may not play much :/.

Thanks guys :D

You won't see any return on the squier, and you will enjoy that deluxe. If your not strapped for cash, and have the space either trade it for something you may use, or keep it in case abuddy comes over and wants to jam. Then you won't be stressed over someone fumbling with an expensive Deluxe.

You could use the Squier for alternate tunings, and/or raise the action a bit and use it for slide guitar.

Depending on the Squier model, the pickups may be pretty crappy. Instead of going for HSS or HSH, you might want to just put good single coils in it. I have a few Strats (with a variety of good pickups) and like the different tones/feels they have. One of them is my fave, but I play the others a bunch too.

Do you do your own setups already? If not, the Squier is a great guitar to tinker with. Similarly, if you're just starting to catch the modification bug, the Squier is a good platform to experiment on.

As you can see from my sig you can own more than 1 Strat. You could use it to learn to do modifications on, practice setups on, or modify it to any way you like. Just know any money you put into it, you will not see any return.

That's pretty much true of modifying any guitar. If you put a pricey set of Bare Knuckles or Fralins in an American Standard or American Deluxe, they won't add to the resale value much -- they might even lower the resale value.

But if you do reversible mods like pickups, pickguards, tuners (that don't require extra holes that won't be covered up by the stock tuners), you can put the stock parts back on if you decide to sell the guitar, then keep the upgrade parts for other guitars, or sell the upgrade parts separately. (If you buy the upgrade parts used, you'll generally be able to sell them for as much as you paid for them.)

You can never have too many Stratocasters, that would be like a girl being too pretty.

GC offers 10% off of new gear with a trade in. That can mean more for the trade-in than the Squier is worth, depending on what you buy. 10% off of an Am Dlx, plus whatever they will give you for the Squier can equal $200 to $250 or more off of the purchase.

Enders,

You owe us a picture of the new guitar*.

*alleged for now :?:

Keep them both. For all the above reasons.

And...yes...Pictures are needed...

Cheers.

All of the above are excellent recommendations. Another not yet mentioned is the possibility that you might wind up someplace with a guitar that you wouldn't want your new guitar to be.[like the cargo hold of a commercial aircraft] Always a good idea to have a reliable take-along whose loss would not be sorely felt. If it's a decent player, upgrade the pups for tone, and let it be a keeper.
I'm actually in the market for the '50's Vintage Vibe in white, for that reason, but they're going have to make it available with a V-neck before I bite the hook. I have no intentions of modding it up with a new neck. I'd buy used white Clapton and swap out the scratchplate for a gold one first. As to your question about how many Strats one could have.....I have four, plus a Bass VI and a Les Paul. For some of us around here, that's not many.

I guess you're right, haha, space isn't really that big a deal to me (yet) so I'll hold on to it until I find a good deal for it.

Pics of my new strat :D

To me I used to think the sound of two strats, whether they're similar/different in price and quality or whatever, don't have that much of difference so I try not to double up and instead get a full range of different models before I double up. But it IS worth the difference, isn't it? Found that out quite recently XD. There seems to be less variation within a model but the variation from model to model of strats and even merely different pickups in the same model is quite significant.

I guess I'm new to the idea of having multiple guitars, cos I'm still a student and am quite naive about gear to be honest, so I hope to be enlightened more :P

By the way, I notice many of you have multiple strats. So do you treat them like separate guitars altogether? Or do you use one of your best strats as a main and the rest only as backups? Just wanna know your personal use of them.

To be honest I think my squier is very playable and awesome in it's own way but a part of me feels silly to be playing it as my main sometimes, especially since I have a new strat :/, maybe it's the price difference and all getting to my head.

If I were to upgrade my squier strat pups, any recommendations? I'm not experienced in modding so anything that needs me to drill extra holes and do a huge makeover is probably a bit too much for my skill level.

Thanks for the replies guys, truly much appreciated =D.

You can also mod your guitar to HHH (3 humbuckers) with coil tap/split options for all the pickups, you'll get a boatload of wonderful tones in your fingertips.

+1

Olympic Pearl, tort guard and maple neck makes for killer combination.

This axe would be cooler with a 3-ply black guard! :P

Would it actually be possible to buy a preloaded pickguard for my squier instead of modding it? Cos I'm not confident of modding it myself tbh, unless it's really basic. I'm not even sure if the pickguard I would buy will fit it or not, cos it's a chinese squier affinity.

I was going for the standard but this captured my attention :D, although initially I wasn't sure of what to think of the S1 but in the end this captured my heart more than the standard. I was peeling the plastic off the pickguard and there seems to be bits stuck underneath the screws especially near between the volume knob and the pickup (I don't think the volume can be taken out like the tone knobs can, can it?). Anything I can do to get rid of it?

Edit: clarified that it was my squier I wanted to mod, not my new deluxe
