 This is my first thread ever anywhere. I am so grateful for this forum. It has been so helpful in buy my guitars and with info. I first bought a squire 60's vibe was very pleased with it but out grow it pretty fast. great guitar but was happier with the highway one sound. 2007. I don't like the mat finish and the 70's head stock plus the one I bought is a little beat up. so, I am looking for that final strat so I can move on to amps.

problem.. I want that highway one sound with the American std look. yesterday I bought a American std. I can return it within 30 days. it has custom fat 50's. it sounds kind of icy. when I bought my squire vibe I picked the 60's over the 50's because the 50's didn't sound as warm.I played the American special and it sounded close to the highway one and then played the tex mex and it almost sounded better and closer. I don't mind spending money on this project just want it done right the first time. should I put in texas specials tex mex or alnico 3 and what brand???
does any one have any input???

thanks from the great white north.

There are a lot of variables here. Have you played with the pickup height of the Am Standard? Also, what amp are you currently playing everything through? You might find that you prefer the Fat 50's through a quality amplifier to the Alnico 3s of the Highway 1.

Yeah...what he said.

Very often people buy guitars and within a few days find out it doesn't sound like they thought it would. Breathe. Play. Adjust. Play. Adjust.

What kind of music do you play? That may help us help you. Also, you talk about getting the guitar right then moving on to the amp. However, without a good (enough) amp with a good setup you might not get the sound you want from any guitar.

For starters...go back to the pickup heights...Fender has a good setup guide to follow or you can just start turning screws. In general, many people find further away is better than closer...

http://www.fender.com/support/articles/stratocaster-setup-guide/

Buying new pickups isn't always the answer, especially if you don't really understand the strenghts and weaknesses of what you already have.

Personally, I dig the sound of the Fat 50s...if you find them thin or "icy", try moving them away from the strings a bit (nominal should be about 4/64-6/64, but you can go even further away) and play around with the tone knobs on the guitar and amp for a while...

Cheers.

Very good suggestions! A lot of folks rush into new pickups without really knowing what they have and how to get the sounds they want.

People seem to be afraid to twist some controls.

you guys are super!!! 8) ! this is helping a lot. keep it coming and I will ensure you get a good beaver  ok first things first. amp it is a fender mustang one. ya ya I know its not the greatest but its a start. I have been fairly happy so far with a few pre-sets and all the on line stuff.. ie band tracks and extra pre-sets plus ablton live has opened my eyes. I like the sound for now, and have like the sound of my highway one thus far.
side not sold my squire vibe for 100.00 more than I payed plus I $@!&#* and music store about the price to day and got 200.00 dollars back.
ok back to the points...I am having a Luther come to my house and give me a private lesson on setting up and possible how to change pots and pups. so the first thing I am going to do is set up my std the same as my highway one or just make a few adjustment and see. I did get the Texas specials and can return them if I don't like them so that's step three.
ok music ...blues funk jazz
ok last should I put the fat 50s in the highway one for resale. would that make it more attractive for the buyers?

once again thanks.

You mentioned that you have a 2011 American standard. Did the 2011 come standard with fat 50's?

Newlife....

Newlife - you are correct that the 2011 spec American Standards had the same alnico pickups that they had used since 2008.

That being said - since Fender had multiple serial number format changes in 2010 the "annual changeover" of serial number decals now takes place about March; in 2012 that "annual changeover" occurred just about the same time that they changed the American Standards to the CS pickups so I'm sure there are a few 2012-spec (with the CS pickups) that have "US11xxxxxx" serial numbers which someone would logically call a "2011" guitar even though it is a 2012.

The second tone pot on my 2010 Stratocaster when set on 10 bypasses the bridge and middle pickup. When turning the tone pot to 10 you will feel a detent. This means the tone pot is bypassed like the bridge pickup on a traditionally wired Stratocaster. The second tone pot is for the middle and bridge pickup. The first tone pot is for the neck pickup. Try adjusting the second tone pot. My 2013 American Standard Stratocaster with "Fat 50's" is wired the say way.

what a nightmare. I should have just been happy with my highway one . I found out after the fact the it was a 20 11 not 2012. there for alnicl 5 not fat 50's . I had the alnico 3 from my highway one put in it and the fret buzz in very noticeable. they set it up and think there is not much they can do this store is a cancer....my patents is up with them.. I am going to put my highway one back together and they can keep the crap. I am aware that this my be a problem with just this guitar.. wish me luck.

OKAY, good luck, man.

However, I have to admit that I am confused about your guitars and the pickups coming and going into them.

long story short. I bought a strat. was told it was a 2012. with fat 50's . was in fact a 2011 strat with alnico 5. I want a strat with gloss finish and 50s headstock. my highway one sounds great but not fond of the finish and 70's head stock. I put the alnico 3.s from my highway one in the 2011 strat std and it was set up and buzzs like there is not tomorrow. at the end I returned there usa strat ( in pieces...) and will know just be happy for the mean time with my highway one. lesson learned!

just like my wife. she may be a bit worn and used and not exactly what I am looking for but she'll do!!! for now!!!!!!

I hope she doesn't read this!

You could buff out that satin finish on that Highway One, you know. I did it to mine.

As for the large headstock, that's not so easily changed.
