Boy you got some balls calling one of our elder statesman a troll. Remember YOU came hear, you just didn't get the answer you wanted. Your not gonna get many more questions answered around hear with an attitude like that. Hope you never have any amp trouble!

And if we were to get REALLY technical about it... argexpat saying that the Stratocaster, a world class guitar that changed music and has been around for 60 years "should accommodate you" (as though the knob and switch placement are design flaws) is the best troll line I've ever seen thrown out on a Strat forum!

So really, the guy argexpat thought was putting out a troll was instead responding as you would expect on a Strat forum to argexpat's pretty obvious troll.

argexpat, you're gonna LOVE those graphtechs man!!!

How come then that George Fullerton changed his personal strat layout so the volume was out of the way and the selector switch was then at such an angle as to be safe from accidentally catching whilst playing?

Surely he knew what he was doing, he helped design the strat in the first place

The custom shop even made some copies

George made "suggestions". As did Bill Carson, Don Randall, and many other luminaries within the Fender Electric Instrument Company.

However, the production Strat's design is the only one that really matters and that was the exclusive province of Leo Fender and Freddy Tavares.

And both of them discarded Mr. Fullerton's suggestions.

The rest is history.

Doesn't mean to say that their design was a better one, it simply means that theirs was the one they used . Apart from volume swells, the controls are far better where Mr Fullerton had them (even the late Jet Harris, removed his strat volume knob, saying it got "In the way")

Remember Leo didn't get it right all the time, several thousand dollars worth of machinery had to be scrapped due to the design faults of the original strat tremolo design

I own 8 strats and love them to death but I agree the pickup selector placement and the bent saddles (on 2 of my eight) suck, this is just my *opinion* of course, there's no right or wrong when it comes to personal preferences.

Excellent point. People forget something else too, that Leo was always improvising and improving on his designs. Sometimes, unfortunately, he made changes simply to save money but many of the changes were actual improvements. The only person whose opinion matters on whether or not Leo got it right the first time is Leo himself and he clearly did not feel he got it right the first time. Else he would not have made a single change.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yes they would. BTW, the original Strats, and the higher priced newer Strats have shorter screws, and it's usually only the cheaper bridges that have the unnecessarily extra long screws. In fact, I've replaced many of the cheaper bridges saddles with better quality Callahams because the stock saddle are not that great anyway, in addition to the screws being too long. The Blacktop certainly qualifies for better saddles.

There is a difference between playing a guitar and flailing about with your hands. Save the theatrics for air guitar.

Also you have to remember that it wasn't really a design flaw as palm muting as a technique wasn't really as prominent when the strat was designed. Thats why they came with Ash tray bridge covers so your hand could rest on them. The screws won't cut into your hand, but you won't be able to palm mute.

Interesting discussion here!

It seems that free market forces have voted over the last 59 years and most features of that 1954 have survived without evolution. There didn't seem to be much pressure for Fullerton's control layout, but it wasn't really offered to the public.

There are other Fender guitars with different control layouts, some models with trems and single coils, key Strat features. The Strat can be modified too (a custom pickguard and maybe some routing), so you can have it your way.

The "ashtray" bridge cover isn't very popular these days, I'd have to admit.
