Hi,
I've recently finished a replica of George Harrison's "Rocky" Strat and set it up for slide playing.
I fitted a set of replica '61 Strat pick-ups and my question is, what would be a good height setting for the pick-ups, bass and treble side, from the top of the pole piece to the underside of the two E strings?

My aim would be to achieve George type tones from it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Every picture and all the information I can find shows the pickups set pretty normal, not high or especially low. Good luck on getting "George" tones out of it.

+1

Aside from the paint job, there wasn't anything really remarkable about Rocky AFAIK. Just add a vintage Vox AC30TB and stir.

So are you saying that the pick-up heights were possibly left at the heights they were (Fender standard settings) when the guitar was used as a regular non slide Strat? That he raised the strings but left the pick-ups as was?

I have AC30TB's (albeit the re-issues) so will experiment!
Thanks for the info, appreciated.

Arjay, do you recommend the AC30 Brilliant section for George type sounds?

I've never owned an AC30TB and have only played through them a handful of times -- you'll need to experiment with it and your guitar to find the right mix of tone-control settings. From some of George's work like "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Day Tripper", and "Revolution", I'm thinking "fat" but with an ample amount of treble overtones.

Roger that. Start with "George" hands, ears and mind. Toss in a sprinkle or two of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Ravi Shankar, George Martin, and mix well with George's incessant pursuit of 'the lost chord' both in the studio, and at the board.

Keep us updated on your progress.

Try raising the action and tweaking the saddles then maybe
a string change to 13's.

You might also want a raised nut if it will be solely used for slide.

Good luck!
