I have been told that there is a spring in the hole where the trem arm screws into. I have a 2012 Am Standard Strat and the tape is no longer covering the hole :? , does it fall out easy, is there a way to pull it out to see if it is there. I tried looking down the hole with a flash light but I could not tell if it has fallen out. I do not use it often but every once in a while I try to figure how I can incorporate the trem sound in what I play ( kind of hard to coordinate the thing  ) anyway when I have it screwed in and bring it up to use I here the sound of the metal on metal as it is turning in to position.
Thank you for any advise you can give me as I am new to the Strat line and tem systems

Yes, the spring falls out quite easily, that's why there is tape on the hole. New ones are cheap, I keep extras for that reason.

If you screw your arm and you don't feel the arm hold in place by pushing a spring , spring is not there !

Put a blob of vaseline on the spring when you drop it in there and it will stay put! :)

No, vaseline will melt and could "damage" guitar wood. Spring with a small drop of silicone ? Or another "dry " solution .

I'm sure if you Google "strat tremolo spring", you'll find many good receipes.

Vaseline melts at 167F/75C. If your guitar gets that hot, Vaseline damage is the least of your worries.
You should only use a tiny blob of Vaseline, not fill the hole with it. People have been usi.g Vaseline for trem arm springs for decades with no ill effects.

Don't use silicone or anything that would make it virtually impossible to remove the spring. With Vaseline, if tbe need ever arises, you could easily use a paperclip with a bent tip or a small pajr of tweezers to pull the spring out.

I lost the springs in these many times and just forgot about them. I screw the arm down to where it is just starting to get snug and use it that way. Tight enough it will stay in place, loose enough I can turn it around backward. I use the trem bar backward a lot too. Those little springs are a pain in the behind...
