Don't be. If the instrument was a present, enjoy the gift in the spirit for which it was intended. Fender's are like old Chevy's......you can change things around to suit your "druthers". Dittos with the Squiers.

My intention is to change the tuning pegs to chrome. That is going to be my first step. One friend just said to make sure they are not original before changing them.

Yup Squier all the way. I'm sticking to the isea the hardware was painted. Look at it this way, you have a platform to build off of. New hardware, pickups, and good to go. Squier may not be top end Fender, but can be made into a quite adequate guitar with a little upgrading. Don't be bummed, just play the crap out of it.

Definitely not a Fender.

That doesn't mean it's a terrible guitar. It may sound great, it may play great. It's a nice looking guitar.

If you want to mod it, be aware that the bridge, pickguard, and pickups may not be standard sizes. So you might need to fill screwholes and drill new ones or things like that. But the tuners should be pretty standard - find a chrome set with the same mounting screw positions and you can just slap them on.

Make note, the really wide spaced 12th fret dots are a sure sign of a fake.

+1

As well, the dots themselves are smaller in diameter than those of a genuine Fender instrument.

That, plus the symmetric mounting-screw pattern of the trem cover are unambiguous hallmarks of a Squier Strat.

In keeping with the hardware and the vibe, I'd spell that 'witch'.

Please keep it constructive mate, I am already down as it is.

No harm intended. Just had the impression that the prior owner wanted to give this guitar a 'goth' vibe. What the guys are saying boils down to: If you think you have a lemon, make lemonade.

I had a discussion with my bandmate last night about whether the tuning pegs are painted or not.

Hi Russell: it's not paint, it's just a factory applied coating. That's how black parts get to be black, similar to gold ones. They're not made from black or gold metal.

It doesn't mean that a previous user sat there daubing his metal parts with black paint: nuttin' to worry about, so far as it goes.

But...

Yep. Put that together with the parallel middle screws on the trem cover that Arjay mentioned; the sunburst on the front, black on the back non-Fender finish; and the fact I can't remember seeing this style of tuner on a Squier (they were usually the "diamond-back" ones)... and I suspect this was never even a real Squier. This is a Stratalike from any one of many makers (Aria, etc) with a user-applied fake decal, or perhaps an out-and-out pirate.

None of which means it can't be turned into a decent playing guitar, if the neck feels OK. At some point most of us have modded the crap out of cheap guitars and turned them into machines we like. The economics of that are debatable, but it's plenty of good clean fun!

Have at it, Russell. :)

Cheers - C
