The last three times I drove up to Auburn to see Larry he was either out playing golf or schmoozing with some local city councilman. So I didn't bother on this trip. A far cry from his "Rutabaga Boogie Band" days in the '70s when he was a rabble-rouser and an agent provocateur.

 I have had the good luck to play his Mid 60's Fender Strat in sunburst he has on the wall. It made me fall in love with the transitional logo for some odd reason. And that thing is real mojo roadworn! Let me guess, was Paul was manning the store? That guy cracks me up.

That's the Strat he played for years with RBB. His other guitar was a goldtop Les Paul.

I believe (if its the same one I'm thinking) the goldtop used to have P-90s. Then he retrofitted it with the humbuckers which he still kicks himself over... :)

I just bought the '59 American Vintage Strat in faded sonic blue. I absolutely love it. All the great classic Fender tones, and I have barely put it down since I got it. I also own a 2012 American Deluxe Ash Strat, which is very nice too.

BTW, I was told by a Fender employee that the faded sonic blue '59 has been superseded by the Sherwood Green color. I'm glad I got the sonic blue, because it has a wonderful 'retro' vibe to it that suits the guitar perfectly.

The very same guitar.

Someday I'll tell you about watching Jeff Watson (later of Night Ranger fame) performing the exact same blasphemous "surgery" on a real '56 gold top Les Paul when he was a guitar tech at Sunrise Music (since renamed Northridge Music with new owners). I winced watching that router bit as it first hit the body!

That kind of thing was a shame, but who knew that the vintage market was going to be nuts?

One microsecond after he began (literally) he started having regrets. But by then the damage was done and it was too late to back-pedal. Ultimately the installation was successful (one DiMarzio SDHB in the bridge, an actual PAF at the neck) but such heresy committed upon a piece of history can never be reversed. IIRC he bought that Les Paul from Guitar Resurrection in Berzerkley.

Ya! Like in 1962 when I trashed my black '60 Danelectro shorthorn, or in '69 when I sent my '58 Strat out to CBS/Fender to be refinished, had a three-ply pickguard installed, and replaced a pickup when only the cover was cracked. To learn from Mandolin Brothers 25 years later that they had 'replaced' the body, not refinished it. Ufff!!

Wow, this thread took a turn for the worse. I was excited to read about the new Vintage series, now I'm bummed about all of the effed-up guitars.

I have a friend that routed out a brand new 25th Ann Strat and installed a Floyd Rose. :o :(

Great, after a night full of horrible imagery in my dreams, I have to read about ZZDoc's '58 Strat body being discarded...NO!!!! I have a friend whose grandfather used to live near the ol' Fullerton plant and he used to see their dumpster full of finished and non-finished bodys and necks. Only if he would have snagged a few... :) I can only imagine ZZDoc's Strat body just tossed out the back door....I'm gonna have to see a therapist now (rocks gently in corner of room)

I would have no shame dumpster diving under such circumstances.
