I have posted this at strat-talk.com but thought it also belongs here:

Having recently bought an American Standard HSS, I had that weird "warbling" in the top register that after a lot of googling found to be termed "stratitus". I thought I would just share the good news. On taking the guitar back to the shop and trying half a dozen different models, the people there could not seem to see there was a problem, and I admit they all sounded the same. Most posts I found recommended lowering the pickups but I tried dropping mine to the board and couldn't get any improvement. Feeling very disillusioned I finally rang my "guitar guy" who seemed to know the problem and I later found out that he is the fender repair rep in Melbourne (Oz). (I should have known that) When I got there he showed me how placing a metal rule between the strings and the pickups would cure the problem. It is a fact that the power of the magnets do funny things to the strings. He took the guitar for a couple of hours to "knock down" the pole pieces on the middle strings. I'm glad I wasn't there to see it but assume he knew what he was doing. Damn thing sings like a bird now. Apparently with 7.5inch fret boards and heavy guage wound strings used back in those days the setup was right but for the modern player the sound was unacceptable. Damn thing sings like a bird now. I am thinking that maybe people like fenders to be "as they used to be" but you gotta say that for $38 he turned a guitar that felt supurb into a guitar that also sounded supurb. So, if you got problems with that weird pulsating kinda out of tune sound at the high end of the neck, don't fret (sic) take it to someone who knows and get em to "knock down" the pickup poles. (Pity Fender don't do it). Just love this guitar !!

Hi Roger, welcome to the Forum.

Glad to hear you got your problem sorted. The people who told you that stratitis can be caused by pickups too close to the strings were not wrong; that is indeed the usual cause. The high G string pole on a staggered set of pickups is a much less common source of difficulties, at least as far as signal flutter is concerned. Still, no doubt it can happen and "knocking down" the pole would be a solution - if it can be done without breaking the winding coils, which is a big risk. Seems your guy got away with it, which is good, but folks won't necessarily be so lucky.

An alternative is simply to use a non-staggered set of pickups, of which there are many to choose from, including models made by Fender.

People more often worry about that "vintage" high G string pole with regard to the overly strong output it can give on a modern non-wound G string. We've discussed the pros and cons of that many times on this Forum and no doubt will again. So long as there are options available then it's a case of strokes for folks, I guess.

Cheers - C

Only because malicious "bots" that roam the internet will pick up on it and you'll soon find yourself bombarded with unwanted junk email and maybe worse...
