Hi guys, new to the forum. A friend of mine bought what he thought to be a MIM 2009 Strat. He's having second thoughts about it and thinking it's fake. I have a MIM from 2006 which has a different logo, however he's does seem right for the period. There's other parts of the guitar that flags issues for me though. I want to post some pics to get some thoughts from you guys but I cant see how I post attachments on here? Anyone????

hopefully it works.
now i've got it home i'm certain it is a fake. the logo in the tuners is wrong, looks the same as a chinese fake i saw once, but that was a USA copy. Why copy a Mexican. When compared to my Mexician this is night and day.

I think it is a parts guitar. The neck plate is incorrect. The neck pocket does not look right, not sure about that hole in the middle? Tuners might have been replaced but are good gotohs I think. Not sure why the end of the neck are was sanded, along with the neck pocket...that usually screams fake, but could be the first owner was an idiot too!

Pickups look like cheap replacements...but only way to tell is to take the pick guard off and post of pic of the underside.

The bridge has correct Fender saddles, and the block is the thinner MIM Standard tremolo. The serial number say '94 IIRC. The headstock looks ok for a MIM Standard too. Again, I think this is a parts guitar.

This could actually be a MIM Standard that someone upgraded some parts too as well? Upgraded saddles, different neck plate, and the replaced tuners...this one could go either way!

FWIW

+1

I concur. Likely Fender parts but not sequentially assembled at Ensenada on the same day.

Thanks guys. The more I look it over i think its more a fake. The truss rod hole looks too small, the nut is terrribly shabby and I dont think the logo looks right on the tuners. 2 string trees? I've googled imagines of 2009 MIM and none have this. The rear cavity plate centre screws are inline too, not offset.
Unfortunaltly I think he bought a fake or as you say parts, but trying to be passed off as a genuine article.

The one with serial on the back is the 'fake'. The one below is genuine Mexico.

Again, adding an additional string tree is somewhat common mod...and above all remember one thing...not a lot of money in faking a MIM Standard. Like both Arjay and I stated, more likely a parts guitar.

What you have is VERY likely a modded MIM Standard, but if the seller said all original that is most certainly NOT the case.

What the heck is that?

Seems to be an "improved" Squier IMO.

Show us under the pickguard.

That body routing just looks really shabby in the spring cavity, I don't ever remember seeing a Squire looking that bad.

And yeah I've added a second string tree to both my MIM and MIA guitars, so don't look at that as beeing the reason to call it fake.

That headstock has a different profile on the fin (too smooth a curve), most MIM and MIA have an "S" curve from the round to fin of the headstock ,like it was deliberately not cut in a smooth arc by design to catch out the fakers.
