Should I stick P90's in a Fender Stratocaster?
Yes. It will sound ace for what you're planning to do with it. 36%  36%  [ 4 ]
Maybe, it wouldn't sound bad but in order to get the full effect you'd be better off putting them in a guitar with a set neck and mahogany body. 18%  18%  [ 2 ]
No. Why would you ruin a work of art? Remove your visage from my presence and cleanse thyself. 45%  45%  [ 5 ]

Wiring makes my head hurt. But just check out the Yamaha SA503 TVL. There's a three soapbar guitar that offers all possible p-up configurations using just two three-way switches. One is a standard three-way controlling the outer two pups. The second is for the middle one, and will switch it off, or on, or on but with the other two cancelled.

Takes a moment to think it through, but doesn't that give a much more intuitive set of switching options than the setup you're proposing? (Same outcome, of course.)

I sort of get the point of this, because the one "switch-down" setting I use on my S-1 equipped HSS Strat is the middle one, which gives all three pickups full on. This offers a big, round, meaty sound for a solo, yet something different than going to the bridge. I tried out the Yamaha SA503 TVL in a shop and that three-pups-on setting seemed to give something roughly similar. And it was a nice sounding guitar.

But then the logical conclusion is to go get yourself the Yamaha. It's an excellent instrument for the price point, and then you can keep your Strat equiped with its three single coils. The way nature intended!

Whatchathink?

If you have a MiM Strat that has a humbucker instead of a singlecoil in the bridge position you could always settle for a Gibson Dirty Fingers pickup for extreme obnoxiousness (seeing as how its a VERY high output bridge-only pickup).

Other than that, the P-90s sound like a great idea. I have one in my '61 Gibson Melody Maker (the original one!) and it sounds like the pickup came straight from the guitar gods.

As for standard strat sized P90's... I've heard they're awful. I've never spoken to anyone who liked them. Maybe I should do a bit more research but this is what I've settled on. Either one of these three configurations or none of them.

I put a set of the Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe SP90 in my 1962RI Stratocaster and I love them...however, if you are only going to be satisfied with a "true" P90, they might not be perfect for you.

The SP90s deliver the strong, beefy girth that a P90 is known for, but you still get some of that sweet Stratocaster sparkle and spank.
I don't know what kind of wood your MIM Strat is (I assume alder), but you're not going to get the same sound as a mahogany or maple-capped mahogany Les Paul would give you (even with the same pickups).

It all goes back to what happens when the sound wave hits the ears--and then what happens between the ears when the waves are processed by the grey matter. It depends on whose ear and the grey matter, too.

Good Vibes To Y'all... 8)

I voted yes do it...
I was thinking two P-90's and the strat single coil in the middle.
Don't route it.
Or maybe just the 2 pickup config for simplicity...

Go for it, two P-90s could be cool. A forum member, SMark, I believe, is quite fond of that set up -- do a search of that name.

I don't know if you need to route out the body to fit them, but I would get a custom pickguard made up with it's own controls (switches, pots, etc) so that it would be easy enough to swap the original pickguard back in some day.

I voted no. I've heard a lot of people rave about the P90, but I just took possession of a guitar today with P90's and I'm not overly impressed with them.

You post a lot of nice pictures, man...

Judging by the date of the OP he's either done it by now or not. Wonder which?

Cheers - C

Rather than install another selector switch, you install a button. I think Fender calls it an S7 switch, but when you're in the fourth and fifth position on a Strat (neck/middle and neck only), pushing the button turns on the bridge pickup.

Like that, your options are:

Neck (5)
Neck/Bridge (5/button)
Neck/Middle (4)
Neck/Middle/Bridge (4/button)
Middle (3)
Middle/Bridge (2)
Bridge (1)
