Should I get the Fender Strotacaster HSS or a Fender Strotacaster SSS?
I can't decide between the two.

Can you be a little more specific? What models? Otherwise, do you want a hum-bucker or not?

IMO, you need one of each at a minimum. I love the pure Strat tone of SSS but there are times when nothing else will do except an HSS Strat.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I like that philosophy, at least one of each. A Hot Rod (or two), an Am Std SSS, an Am Std HSS, a Blacktop, an Am Dlx SSS, an Am Dlx HSS, a...... oh, you mean one SSS and one HSS? OK.

That's like asking someone else if you should buy the chocolate or butterscotch topping.

First guitar? Play both without looking at the pickups..which sound do you prefer?

Have a humbucker guitar? Get the SSS Stratocaster.

Got extra money? Get at least one of each.

Based on the information you've provided, my first recommendation would be a Rickenbacker guitar with Fender Jaguar pickups. A close second would be a Gibson ES175 with a P90 in the neck and a Super Distortion at the bridge. It depends though, on whether your amp is a Marshall 18watt or a Vox AC15. If you're using a Fender amp made after 1966, definitely consider a Reverend Buckshot guitar with stock pickups.

I'd rather have a Stratocaster than a Strotacaster. I think they play and sound much better.

James-

I have both and here are my thoughts. It really depends on the music you play and the gear you have. If you like things on the heavier side a Humbucker makes things much easier.

If you lean towards more of a harder rock type sound, go for the H/S/S. The cool thing is that you can easily convert it to S/S/S if you ever decide to go that route.

Think of the sounds you have in your head and if they are more (ZZ Top, Zepplin, EVH, etc) than you are leaning towards Humbuckerland. Gilmore, SRV, EJ, etc, go for single coils.

Don't forget you can also wire the tone control to the bridge pickup, this will help fatten up your single coil sound. And/or you can always put a single coil sized bucker in your bridge position.

If you aren't filling a stable with guitars, just get the HSS.

Just use the neck single coil pickup for the classic Hendrix/SRV/Trower kinds of tones. And use the bridge humbucker for other hard rock/metal tones.

You have a lot of bases covered with the HSS.

Here's another option...sit down with an Eric Clapton model and see if that midboost circuit will satisfy your soul. Coming from an extended use of a Les Paul through a Marshall, and thereafter, his iconic 'Blackie', the development and design of the Eric Clapton guitar was his attempt to have the best of both worlds. By tweaking the boost circuit and the TBX tone pot you can roll from glassy to fat as you see fit. It just might do it for you, too. Another feature. The neck on that guitar is unique to the Fender line. There's no other like it. It's my favorite.

Check it out!
