Hi Guys,

I am a newbie but was lived for music since I was a kid. I have always loved the electric guitar and finally bought one. I am hoping that now in my mid forties that I can be successful at playing the electric guitar. I took a friend who plays and owns a part time blues band to assist with my purchase.

We went to a popular music store and purchased a Fender Stratocaster with a serial number bearing ICS11168265

Upon doing some research, Wiki states that the S in the SN after 2011 indicates that the guitar is a Squire "The ICS11XXXXX Prefix has also been seen on 2011 Indonesian made Squiers on Standard models and on Squier Stratocaster Vintage 70's models. I= Indonesia, C= Cor-tek, S= Squier brand."

Can you guys shed some light on this please? The guitar is stamped as a Fender Stratcaster but not to sure now what to think.

Thanks Guys.

Just an attachment for anyone who came across this thread.

"In the 1930s, Squier began making strings for the era's new electric instruments; the company also sold pianos, radios and phonograph records until divesting itself of all string-related products in 1961.

Fender entered the picture in the 1950s, when the V.C. Squier Company began supplying Southern California inventor and businessman Leo Fender with strings for his unusual new electric guitars. The V.C. Squier Company became an official original equipment manufacturer for Fender in 1963, and Fender bought the V.C. Squier string company in early 1965 shortly before Fender itself was bought by CBS in May of that year. By the mid-1970s, the Squier name was retired as the strings had taken the Fender name."

The serial number indicates an Indonesian made guitar. Can you post a picture of the headstock, showing the decal, and a shot of the entire guitar? There are some foreign made guitars labeled "Fender". Some Japanese and Korean models are labeled Fender, but I don't know about Indonesian, maybe.

What was the price, did you buy new or used and as suggested, pics would help.

Sounds like it might be a Modern Player, but the price point would help to nail it down.

Hi Shim, Mike and CR,

Thanks for all of your replies, much appreciated.

I feel like a dummy, upon looking at my guitar again, it's labeled a Sqire Stratocaster. I paid $250.00 for it in Canada which is the same in US$ at the time.

I am disappointed a bit because I maintained in my head that I wanted a Strat and not an low or entry level Squire or Afinity series. From what I have been told by the store staff I bought it from, the Squire and Afinity is about the same level.

I am not sure how accurate that is because I could have gotten the Afinity for $ 100 or more off.

I will make the best of it for now, hopefully learn to play on it and then upgrade later.

Thanks so much guys, you guys are great and helpful.

I have owned some decent Squiers, don't sweat it, there are plenty of good ones. All that matters is if it plays and sounds good, and you like it. It sounds like it might be a Standard Series for that price.

It seems that you got what you paid for, a Squier.

Enjoy it.

I have a Stratocaster USA Standard and have bought a few Squier Strats for myself & my kids over the years. All of them are good enough to perform with. My most recent purchase is a Squier VM Jaguar Bass Special. Again, plenty good to gig with and just plain fun to play.

Enjoy what you have. As your skills increase, get a Fender USA if that floats your boat. I was in a band that most of the guitars were Fender Squiers and my bass was a Fender Jazz USA.

The quality of a Squier is way better than the price would lead you to believe.

You are quite correct Shim, it is a standard series.

I like the Fender amp logo stuck on it.

Cheers.

Orv, the Fender logo was cut from a 1 mil chrome material using a sign making plotting/cutting machine and then attached to the guitar.

Cheers.

You have a great looking first electric guitar! I still have my first electric, a used ES335 copy. After 30+ years it's still a keeper.

The main thing is to have a guitar that draws you to it...you want to play. Then learning to use it is fun and enjoyable.

Got my first guitar lesson in my mid-thirties. I was in my forties before playing in a gigging band. Now that I'm retired, playing is a wonderful way spend time.

It looks like it has the 70's big headstock. Could it be some sort of 'vintage' series, or '70's' reissue??

Nice looking guitar, btw. Squiers are nothing to scoff at, generally, the $250 makes me think it is something along these lines:
