Hi there.

I was wondering if any of you lovely knowledgeable folks know if this is definitely a 1976 Fender Strat? There is quite a bit of wear to it but it still sounds great. I'm thinking about selling and wondered if anyone had a rough idea of what the value would be?

Thanks all for any input, here's some pictures:

Yup.

The serial number def states its a '76 - assuming all part original etc...

I take it that's a 'walnut' finish?

When did Fender begin putting the serial numbers on the headstock? I know that all late '70s Strats had an "S" number, but I'm not sure when they started that.

Over all, the guitar looks right. During the late '70s the contours were getting pretty shallow.

I would price it at about $1200 to $1400.

Latest price guide has it between $1700 and $2200, but I suppose it depends on who's buying it :-)

From what I can tell, yes. Serial # checks out. Specs look correct. Shes a beauty! Love the look of 70's Strats.

I agree, that looks like a real 1976 Fender Strat.

Many call that color "mocha brown" but it was actually called "walnut" in the literature of the time.

The serial numbers were moved to the headstock in about mid-1976. So that guitar could be from early 1976.

I have a 1974 Strat in that color (serial number in the 500,000s). The first thing I did after buying it used was to put on a white pickguard. The color of mine has lightened up quite a bit. Turns out that color was quite variable. Some are darker and some have more red hue.

Yea, I agree that over-all it looks right. Only one little niggle...either the pickguard or the trem cover has been changed. Not a biggie from a players point of view but some collectors can raise a huge fuss about such things. Personally I'm a guitar player and to me it's just a stinkin' piece of plastic, but some folks can get anal about it, particularly when it comes to haggling over price. I.e., that missing tone knob...on a newer Strat it's no big deal as you can get volume/tone knobs just about anywhere for cheap, but on a "vintage" Strat like this, wouldn't surprise me if someone tried to knock an extra $50 off the price because of it.

Just something to be aware of.

To really tell though you need to check the neck, pots and pickups before I would call it 100% a 76 strat.
