It may be an issue with a change in the manufacture of the screw or it could be that each person has their own way of playing and resting their hands in various different ways and places.

I suspect it probably has something to do with my picking technique, which could be more accurately described as a part picking/part bludgeoning technique...

The previous owner had the action on mine set seriously low, and no buzzing. But the saddle adjustment screws were sticking up quite a bit.
I changed strings last night and of course it started buzzing all over. I adjusted all the string heights to 1.6mm. Now the screws are pretty close to flush on all of the saddles. I got rid of all the buzzing except for the low E. I've got to tweak that some more.
What I don't get is how the PO got the action so low without buzzing? I put 9's on. I'm pretty certain that's what I took off. Sebber, your action must be set pretty low if your screws are high.
PS: I brought the Clapton to a monthly jam Friday night. The TBX and boost really work well. The boost gets me into singing solo's with just a twist, but you've got to like crunch. I was playing through a Vox AC30 that was cranked in order to be heard and it was pretty much all crunch all the time.
Edit: I dug the old strings out of the trash and they were 10's. So I guess they would have sat a little higher on the nut and allowed the saddles to be set lower.

Drew, because the guitar was set up with 10's initialy, by you putting on 9's you have applied less string tension to the neck, allowing it to now back bow slightly more, and hence the buzzing occured as strings got closer to the frets.

With reference to the Allen screws - have you tried adjusting the neck tilt angle?

A small adjustment in the neck pocket with a shim can go a long way at the bridge end of things, meaning that less of the screws will sit above the saddle top.
If your Strat has a neck tilt adjuster then it's even easier to do.

Thanks for the posts guys. The action is currently very low, or certainly lower than I prefer on my Strats: I prefer a higher action than most, gives me something to dig into. I will be changing the 10s that are currently on there to 11s at some stage, which in itself will up the action a little, but I'll wait and see how the 11s feel on it before I look to raise the saddles, thus reducing the amount of the fiendishly sharp allen screws that stand proud of the saddles themselves.

On the topic of mods: I'm beginning to get used to the TBX and MDX controls and their function, but years of habit still has me reaching for the wrong Tone control when I want to dial the bridge pickup's bite back a bit. That said, the TBX and MDX controls do make this a hugely versatile Strat, honestly I hadn't fully appreciated the range and depth of tones this configuration offers, and I'm beginning to like it very muchly indeed!

Ok so after the new EC Strat aced its second band practice on Thursday night, I'm really blown away by this guitar! In line with some of the wiser advise on this thread there is now absolutely no question of me modding it, it's totally perfect as it is!

I've got to say that I've never been a fan of active electronics in guitars, I "grew out of" humbuckers in my late teens and since then I've always been a traditional vintage-style true single-coil zealot, but after putting this guitar through its paces again and getting a better acquainted with these new-fangled Tone pots I'm now most certainly a convert and can now totally agree with those advising me to leave it as is. All the classic Strat sounds are right there, but there's so much more than that on tap. I'd heard mixed reviews about these Fender Noiseless pickups, and maybe it's this active circuit that puts their tone out in another league of its own!

I just assumed that me and an active electronics equipped guitar wouldn't get along but the opposite has been the case. I've gone from wanting to mod the EC Strat so that it was equipped like my other Strats (passive vintage output neck and middle single-coils, slightly hotter bridge unit, traditional neck tone pot, bridge pickup hooked up to the middle pickup No-Load Tone control) to now wanting to put Vintage Noiseless and the EC TBX/Active Mid Boost in my other Strats! This could get expensive!

It's still tearing the bejeezus out of my picking hand as I haven't done anything about those wickedly sharp saddle height adjustment screws, I did try to make an effort to use a less violent picking technique so I'm less lacerated than last week but sometimes I just can't help really digging in, especially on an instrument as inspiring to play as this one!

Just leave the boost flat.

However, keep in mind that the boost can't necessarily be used for distortion, you can dial in the MDX to 5 to get a nice jazzy Jim Hall-inspired tone.

With a clean boost and a hint of the TBX the EC Daphne Blue is capable to emulate a fat hollowbody jazz box (though Eric rarely plays jazz scores on a Strat, he uses either an ES335 or a Byrdland for this kind of music).

I just stumbled on to your story about the Eric Clapton 2009 Fender Custom Shop Daphne Blue Stratocaster. If you haven't modified it I'm wondering if you would like to sell it and make a little cash. I've been looking for such a guitar to no avail. Please let me know if you might (or someone else who reads this) like to part with it for someone who might love it more than you!
Thanks so much in advance.
