No case candy, but look at that nifty bridge cover!

That's a nice catch if ever there was :D

If you want to go passive why not get a fully loaded scratchplate and remove the current one completely.
It would be a simple operation to revert back to original spec should you decide to do so.

It's what I did with my American Deluxe HSS - I eventually decided that I didn't get on with the fitted humbucker and the sophisticated wiring selection was stuff I was not going to use, so I ordered up a fully loaded scratchplate made from Fender parts and swapped the original one out.
The original is now boxed, and it's a minor job to refit it should I decide to do it.

Step back from the Clapton Strat!
I'd let it be and look for another if you want that many mods.

Ok well had the first band practice with the new axe last night! My goodness what an instrument, even though she's still got the 10s that she came with on her and I string all my Strats with 11s, that neck, the fit, the action... what a player!

I've worked out what these "Tone" controls do: as Chromeface said, the TBX (the first tone) knob has a middle detent to it: up to the detent it operates just like a standard tone control, but after the detent it adds treble and bass and really thickens up the tone, humbucker-ish. The second tone control seems to work like some kind of active volume boost. Also as Chromeface said, it's specifically a mid-boost to compensate for the lack of mids when the TBX is cranked up, but to my ear it just seems to add a whole load of extra volume/gain, especially when dimed!

As much fun as I had with these unusual "Tone" controls last night, I think I prefer standard non-active Strat controls: to me it seemed almost as if, with these active controls, the guitar has a couple of OD pedals sort of built into it, and given that none of my other Strats have this, and given that I've got all sorts of options on my pedal board for gain/boost/OD/dist/fuzz/whatever, I'd rather that this guitar was electronically the same as my other Strats so that my rig doesn't need to be tweaked to accommodate it... which is precisely the reason I settled on just Strats in the first place: interchangeability!

I'm going to leave it "as is" for the time being and play/explore some more before I make a call on an electronics or pickup change. I've got to say actually that while it was set to "standard Strat mode" (TBX on centre detent and the other "Tone" control on 0) I really liked the sound of the Noiseless (N3?) pickups, so I suspect they're going to stay regardless of what I choose to do with the "Tone" controls.

What an awesome guitar though! My ONLY issue I have with it is the sharpness of the saddle height adjustment allen screws: they tore the flying flip out of my picking hand last night and I'm in genuine pain today as a result! Still, it's a good kinda pain... holy smokes! What a guitar!

Welcome to the club. My story is similar to yours. I saw EC in concert a couple of years ago and fell in love with the Daphne Blue Strat. Like you I never expected to be able to buy one, but a few months ago one turned up and I had to jump on it even though I really didn't need another guitar. I paid a little less than you but I didn't get any case candy.
I think you should play it for a few months before you decide to mod it. I would be surprised if you decided you didn't like the tones it gives.
Here's mine:

She's exquisitely gorgeous Drew365! Everyone who's seen mine has remarked on the loveliness of the Daphne Blue finish, and with the way this one plays, I think I may just have a new favourite Strat! Need to get some 11s on mine still though...

Your pickups should be Lace Sensor, not N3's. Your a better man than I. I do a lot of bending and my old fingers can't handle 11's. I use 9's on my Strat, 10's on my LP.

That mid boost does not only boost the midrange but it adds 25 db of output to the guitar.

On the Claptons they have been using the Vintage Noiseless pickups since 2001; they've never altered the Clapton to use either the SCN pickups or the N3 pickups that have come out since the Vintage Noiseless models were standard on the American Deluxes. On the Claptons I'm kind of partial to the old Lace Sensors myself; wish I had picked up that 7-Up green one I tried out back in 1989 or 1990. :(

Hi Sebber: congrats on the guit.

I take it you've mostly used block type saddles previously? Just in case you are unaware, you can buy replacement saddle height screws in different lengths, so's you don't need to have them poking out the top of the saddles and hurting your hand. Just for example, about a quarter of the way down this page the seller is offering a range of lengths at 45 cents a screw. Even with international postage that ain't going to break the bank:

http://www.callahamguitars.com/partsstr.htm

Other sellers on different continents also offer calibrated "low level" screw sets, for the same purpose. (Though I'm blowed if I can find one right this second.)

Alternatively, some people simply note by how many threads each screw is sticking out the top of the saddle and then hacksaw that much off the bottom. It is important then to file and smooth with wet-and-dry paper the bottom of the screw to a slight curve, so it sits true on the trem plate and doesn't rip it up with jagged edges.

Possibilities.

Cheers - C

Knowledge of the of hows and whys of the evolution of this guitar's design since its inception in 1986 is important to your understanding as to why some of us [Clapton guitar owners, in particular] are in disbelief that you want to change its very nature. If you lack this, and rather than offering you a long dissertation on this project, I suggest that you find a current copy of A.R. Duchossoir's excellent book, 'The Fender Stratocaster'. There have been extensive discussions on the subject of this guitar in the Forums across the past six years. A search of archives will certainly offer you access to many of these, from which you are certain to glean a great deal of information in that this guitar is offered exists in three different incarnations Artist, Custom Shop Signature, and Custom Shop Masterbuilt. There are subtle, but significant differences between them the knowledge of which I'm sure you'll find interesting. Given the fact that you now own a limited edition finish, which will never be repeated, I suggest that you learn the many different sonic possibilities of this fine instrument, and do not alter it. Beginning with it's fantastic neck, a one of a kind in the line, it is, in my humble opinion, the finest Stratocaster Fender has to offer.

Hi Ceri, thanks on the info! I have had Strats over the years with the vintage style bent steel saddles (at the moment I have one other but they're different height allen screws like you describe, and two others with block type saddles) and a few of those, as well as other Strats I've played, have had a similar lacerating effect on my picking hand.

To be honest it's been quite a while since it's happened so I can't say that having the side of my hand look and feel like it lost a fight with an angry cat was an experience that was fresh in my memory.

Sebber, I replaced my saddle height screws with stainless ones, on which I used a DREMEL to round off the tops so that my hand could rest on them more comfortably. Those threads were sharp and ate through my hand too before then.

I find the allen screw issue quite interesting. Back in the day..[60's] I played a '58 Strat professionally for about 10 years without such ailments. Wonder what's changed in the design?
