I got a new Blacktop Strat delivered and the rosewood fretboard has these dark areas around frets 15, 16, and 17. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this is and if it should be returned because of it. Here is a photo. Thanks.

Those marks look like residue from the tape used when finishing/polishing the frets. I use Gerlitz Guitar Honey to clean and condition the rosewood/Ebony fretboards and bridges on all of my guitars. Go to 2:49 on the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hEBYYs0foY

Honestly, unless you can feel something specifically wrong with your fingers, I wouldn't worry about it. Could be left over residue from the factory as Otis suggested or could even be some sweat stains from the person who setup the guitar at the factory (in theory every guitar that comes off the assembly line gets setup and played to ensure QC). Either way it's not something that should effect the performance or how playable the guitar is...certainly not something I would return a guitar over.

Enjoy your new axe!

Next time you treat your fretboard, (you -do- treat your fretboard, right?) see if it doesn't come out/wipe off with the lemon oil or wipe, or whatever you use. +1 wouldn't worry about it too much.

If this is some high end custom, take it back and let them worry about it. You would only typically see that on a cheap Chinese fender knockoff, but on lower end fenders, I guess one can slip through the cracks. It's not necisarily from tape, but from where finish pooled up and built up. On cheaper guitars they use a dark stain/finish to make it look like nicer ebony/rosewood. You can use a cleaner as the previous person suggested. If it doesn't work I would use some watered down paint thinner, and wash it off right away!! Only use this as a last resort, and don't do it if it is an expensive strat.
