Hey there,

I been screwing around on my brother's Schecter lately and just playing random stuff and my dad said if I keep it up he would get me a guitar for Christmas. Well Christmas came last week and he bought me a brand new 2008 American Standard Strat in Candy Cola. I bought a Coloriffic pickguard with the american flag on it and was wondering if its difficult to replace the pickguard. Then I will name it Captain America lol. I've never messed around with a guitar before... but I do alot of tinkering with PC case modding and airsoft guns.

Also do you guys have any suggestions on how to learn to play or get started? I have that Fender starting electric guitar DVD, but I totally cannot play chords! If anyone can recommend an instructor in the Santa Clarita, CA area that will be cool. I'm thinking of taking some guitar classes at CSUN this fall but I don't wanna waste my summer.

I can play a few songs like Knights of Cydonia, Plug In Baby, Iron Man, Sunshine of My Love, and like the intro to Purple Haze. But other than a few other licks and riffs, I absolutely suck and I feel bad for asking for such a nice guitar when I know people who can play way better than me don't have one.

So I feel like I gotta step up to the plate and be worthy of "Captain America".

What really drives me nuts is that I can read the notation and play any song on my keyboard, but to translate that into guitar playing even with tablature is like writing with my left hand. Technically it kind of is becuase when playing classical piano and stuff usually my right hand carries the melody and has much more ability do to complex songs involving crossovers. But on the guitar my wimp hand has gotta hold down the frets and my right hand just picks! :P

Thanks guys!

Playing guitar feels awkward for any beginner. Hang in there! Repetition and practice!

I would look into private lessons before CSUN. Classes at CSUN are usually for people who have a basic knowledge of guitar already. I use to live in Valencia and took lessons there.

That's a really nice guitar you got for Christmas. Pretty lucky.

Also, be cautions with the pain. If you start to feel pain in your hands, fingers or wrists, stop for a time and let the pain subside.

Someone in here recommended this web site, and it is just excellent. Stuff from gear to basic to advanced lessons. And it is FREE (though I have donated some money, cause I don't want the site to go away). I'm sure you'll find something of interest every time you visit.
