Jdavis - thanks for posting the photos. I think that is a Strat Ultra on a Strat Plus body. Only the Strat Ultras had the combination of ebony fingerboard, chrome-plated Wilkinson nut and chrome-plated locking tuners. A Strat Plus would have had the stain finish on the Wilkinson nut and locking tuners.

The pickups and tremolo lead me to believe the body definitely came from a Strat Plus; I suspect that someone swapped necks between their Strat Plus and their Strat Ultra somewhere along the line, long before the store you purchased the guitar from obtained it.

I agree with John C plus the color looks like Gun Metal Blue as well. The other part of that is that it shipped out as a Strat Ultra....which is what the original dealer was charged for it........so very, very doubtful that it left the factory that way. Still....looks nice.
Cheers,
rob

Ok, thanks so much! So from your view, does this hurt or help the value? I can see it hurting the value because it's not original, but helping because it's a better neck

I would think hurts the value because it becomes a partsocaster, though I personally dont agree with that mindset.

This was interesting. Yep that is an Ultra neck and they are quite valuable. Color is Gun Metal Blue as pointed out. Chrome Wilkinson nut is a give away that this came off an Ultra too. 99% of the time when people email me asking if their Plus has an Ebony board it turns out to simply be very dark Rosewood. I did see one Plus DX with Ebony, white markers, and brushed nut. Maybe it was a special order or something, but was not a standard issue Plus. Great thread!

Thanks for your help everyone! I believe I'm going to buy a loaded pickguard with HSS lace sensors that are a little higher output to better suit me. The golds sound amazing. But I can't get them to drive my ac30 how I like haha. The neck not being original frees my conscience a little to alter the guitar a little. I will keep the original pickguard and pickups intact in case I ever change my mind, or, heaven forbid, sell/ trade the guitar. Thanks again for your help! I'll post pictures if I change anything!

Pretty interesting post Jdavis. Even though the Ultra ebony fretboard neck probably isn't original, I would consider it a valuable upgrade. Obviously opinions will vary, but only mine matters.

What neck plate came on the guitar? Did it say Ultra or have "Fender" on a diagonal, like a Plus would, or some other variation?

I recently restored a '93 Plus and when I found a set of vintage Ultra pickups, pots & switch for sale, I couldn't resist them.

With Xhefri's help I got them wired up correctly and they are plenty hot enough for me! BTW, you should visit his site for more Ultra info: http://xhefriguitars.com/page4.html

Have fun experimenting, that's a great guitar find.

Starting with the neck my ohm readings: Blue - 13.07, Gold - 7.59 & Red Dually (lower) - 14.93.

I visit the page often! haha. The neck plate is the Fender Diag. and since your opinion is the only one that matters, and it matches mine, thats the one i'll go with. I've emailed Lollar pickups asking about some of their pickups...I want to go the HSS route, and I may do the lollar version of the fender WRHB, the Regal, or i may go standard PAF style...and then theres always the lollartron...but for the neck and middle, i'm just going to do classic neck and middle pickups...

I've been trying for the last month or so to trade this strat for a tele or jaguar or jazzmaster or les paul to no avail. I can't in good conscience tell people it is all original, because it's not. But people look at it like it's scrap parts scabbed together...If only they would play it...I'm afraid im going to have to break down and buy tv jones pickups and go cabronita all over this thing
