Hello Stratocaster hive-mind! Newbie here with an interesting guitar he does not know the true story of. Picked this up just Saturday from a local sailor recently returned from Japan.

It looks, feels (7.6 lb), and sounds like a vintage 1962 Strat, but it isn't. There's a date stamped onto the heel of the neck of "OCT 30 2009." There's no stripe on the neck, vintage tuners, single string guide, three patent numbers under the small spaghetti logo on the small headstock. Other findings:

It came in a tweed gig bag, if that even remotely matters. The pickups are Van Zandt, a True Value in the neck, and Blues at middle and bridge. You can see the solder is different on the volume pot for those. Note that the tremolo ground routes to the output jack.

Ideas? Suggestions? Look familiar?

More info: 7.25" radius fretboard...checked with a gauge. Guitar weighs 7.6 pounds. Serial number reads 93702. Yes, I suspect it's bogus.

My guess is its a 1960s reissue of some sort from mexico with a few swapped out parts and a home done relic job. Looks like a cool guitar, as long as you didn't pay too much, play and enjoy.

Not much help I know :D

Gruhn's got back to me on this too. It's a 2009 '62 Reissue, heavily relic'd, with slightly modified electrics. Sweet! My obsession for the week now has a name. (see below)

Also: check this out. This article, albeit for a 2010, describes this guitar very well.
