It won't wear off very easily. You'd be better off to let it get dinged. Bump into walls, doors, cymbals. Slide it up against mic stands and Marshall stacks. Let your drummer friends play it.

If you do gigs (and aren't too careful with it), it will gain that "aged" look.

Have fun.

In about 20 or 30 years it will look really cool!

I really don't like that poly finish. It won't get off easily. It'd be great if fender would offer 2008 american standard with the EJ-style glossy nitro finish on the body.

I think the poly finish on a strat takes about one cosmic millenium to wear away.

This explains why my 98 MIM strat looks so amazing. I actually think that the poly repairs itself like some sort of alien life form.

Hollo Guitardudemd,

My 8 year old poly coated strat
still looks new.
I'm quite happy about that.

Cheers.

Man, that stuff is bulletproof. Kevlar for guitars. After the nukes fall all that survives are cockroaches, ants and poly coated strats. I hope the roaches gain dexterity.

Brilliant!

Now that would be a sight to behold. A strat-wielding giant cockroach would make Slipknot seem rather pedestrian by comparison!

Unless you really rag on it, that poly finish will look almost the same in 20 years. They're great if you want your guitar to look like it just came off the rack forever, but they suck if you want your guitar to look like a working musician's guitar. I love that fact that some of the new Fenders are coming with nitro finishes, which age very nicely, like all the pre-1968 strats.

I have a 94 MIM with a poly finish and tried to strip the paint off. I didn't scuff it, but just put gel stripper on it all night. Didn't do anything except shine the damn thing up. That's good and bad. I figured it was possessed and didn't want to be another color, so I left it alone :) Now, it's still candy red metallic, and I just added a few chrome racing stripes to it. Apparently "Lucy" wants to stay red.

it is possible to get an aged look on poly finish my guitar is about 8 years old and it JUST started to have that aged workhorse strat look, you just have to play the hell out of it and not worry about bumping it.. wihtout doing it on pourpose.. thats how youll get it to look aged and well worn but not abused, unless your into the abused look which can be cool too. Poly is just so freakin hard and resistant but anything will eventualy wear out, just gotta work harder at it!

The poly finish is indestructible. It is bullet proof, has the strength of a nuclear bunker. It can cure cancer, and is Chuck Norris's Kryptonite.

IT KNOWS NO PAIN.

Right - I shot my poly strat with a 45 magnum and the bullet bounced off and hit a Les Paul nearby... the Paul exploded into a million pieces.
