I have been playing an American Deluxe strat (HSS) with a rosewood neck for about a year. I really liked it, but I wanted a strat with a maple neck, so I just bought an American Standard and put a Duncan SH-1 (I think) single coil sized humbucker and put in hot noiseless pups in the neck and middle.

The difference in weight and feel between the Deluxe and Standard is huge to me. The Deluxe feels so much stronger, seems to have better tone and just seems to be made all around better.

I was very surprised at what a difference there is between the 2. The Standard feels like a toy compared to the Deluxe. I knew there'd be a little difference, but jeez...

Anyone else feel the same?

It may also depend on the year and the guitar itself. The woods are never identical.

You try in various years and it would not be the same conclusion without doubt. Sure pickups are not the same with Am Deluxe and Am Standard

Some guitars come out of the lot some else not.

I have a 1999 American Deluxe Stratocaster and a 1995 American Standard Stratocaster. My 1995 have a better tone ....and feel to me. I bought new and I pay more than 2K for my Am Deluxe Strat with taxes in Canada in 2000. My Am Standard Strat cost me $300 for a used one.

But I won't say the same with any other 1995 American Standard.

I don't know that I've ever noticed the huge level of difference you appear to have noticed. I do notice a difference but to me it's a more subtle thing. The one thing I seem to notice almost all the time is that Deluxes often seem to feel slightly heavier but that could just be a co-inky-dink. People have often told me that my perception of differences bewteen them is all my head but the perception does persist despite being aware of that possibility. I think it's mostly about feel but I don't think I could tell you why. There are some visual differences.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

OK, I'm an idiot. I switched to .10's several months ago on my Deluxe (from .09's). On my new standard I put .09's on it. That was the major difference. I never realized what a difference going from .10's to .09's can make!

Now the Standard and Deluxe feel much more alike. (The Deluxe is still heavier).

Deluxes employ better tonewoods and sport more contemporary features.

Do you like the .10's better? I questioned Guitar Center about the strings that came on my American Deluxe Strat when I was testing it in the store. I thought they felt heavier than .09's, but they swore it came with Fender Bullet .09's. A few weeks later when I changed strings, I discovered someone had put .10's on it at the store. Not only that, but they appeared to be D'Addario strings with the color-coded ball ends. I measured them with my digital calipers and they were in fact .10's. I had already purchased .09 bullet ends, but didn't like the sound as much, so I've used the D'Addario .10's ever since, LOL!

Here is a picture of the guitar shortly after I bought it in 2012: http://www.reverbnation.com/page_object/page_object_photos/artist_3485272?sel_photo_id=14797983&onphotoview=increment_lp_photo_views

If you look for my song, "Ode To Sergio" on that site, you can hear what it sounds like with the .10's, recorded through a Mustang III amp via USB. It is also featured heavily on "Lonesome Luau," although I used a Les Paul for part of the leads (it is very apparent when the Les Paul kicks in).

That's a great tone. What setting did on the Mustang did you use?

Sorry it took so long to reply. I must have missed the email notification back in July. I haven't been back to this forum until now.

The patch I used on "Ode to Sergio" was one that I modified. I believe I started with the "Twin Surf" patch. It had vintage tremolo, stereo tape delay and small hall reverb. I'm not sure what the original patch had. I've overwritten many of the factory patches that I didn't care for and used them for my own custom patches. Anyhow, I think the V1 Mustang III had a patch called "Twin Surf" and that was what I started with. I just looked at the amp and I still have the original patch (#36), "Surf Twin Reverb" which used the '65 Twin Reverb amp model. I'm pretty sure that is the one I started with. I love the patch I created, though. I use it with the Strat all the time. I just recorded a version of the Christmas song, "What Child Is This" over the weekend. I used that patch with the Strat as well as with a Les Paul & EBow for the "flute" lead track. It's on my song list at reverbnation, if you want to hear it. Click the URL in my signature to go there.

I love that amp and the Strat!

Merry Christmas, Fender folks!

I never understood why the American Standards came with 9s. I just bought one a month or so ago and I didnt play it much. I played it enough to feel my way around the neck to make sure there werent any major problems. Took it home and set it up with 10s right away. Set it up to my liking and off I went. I like the tone and feel much better with 10s.

I use D'Adarrio 9.5's on mine. I think it's a nice compromise. My Am Dlx is nearly a pound heavier that my Clapton CS. Not sure why.
