So i've done truss rod adjustments on all my guitars in the past, and I work on all my guitars all the time, so I'm not exactly timid when it comes to these things, but I've run into something with a truss rod on my brother's guitar that made me nervous, so I stopped to research.

He has a 97 strat and to my knowledge has never had it set up since he bought it new back in 97-98. He gave it to me to set up, because the action was ridiculously high.

He had a scary amt of relief in the neck, so I went straight for the truss rod first. I got maybe a 1/2 a turn on it (clockwise, fyi) before it seemed to reach it's limit. I really didn't want to force it & get myself into something i couldn't undo.

So my first question is: is it possible for this relief to have been in this neck for so long that the truss rod can't straighten it back out?

Assuming that the answer to the first question is "no", what is the BEST next move?
For example, should I try backing off on the truss rod, then tighten it again?
Any other suggestions?

I've just never had any trouble at all with one, but at the same time i've never had one with this much relief either, plus it's my brother's guitar, so I'm trying to be cautious in how I proceed.

Thanks in advance!

You may want to run this by an authorized fender repair shop. I had a similar problem and it turned out the neck was dried out. It was quickly remedied with what (as I recall) was called a heat press.
