For the hard rock, you'll probably want a hum-bucker. That leaves the Am Dlx in a HSS configuration.

Are you really going to base your decision off of what someone else would get?

Do you mean "of all the guitars" ever made, any brand, or of the three that you listed? I went by the three that you listed, and the styles of music that you listed. I figure that you'll want something with a hum-bucker to cover the hard rock. The EJ and HR don't have hum-buckers and I wouldn't want to modify either guitar.

I have the '62 HR, and it isn't great for hard rock, but sweet in it's own right, especially for clean rhythm and bluesy leads. I use a Blacktop Strat HH for rock, hard rock, jazzy stuff and blues and it does a great job for just about any style, but also depends on the amp(s) that you'll use. IMO, the Blacktop is one of the best deals going, and it can cover most any type of music. The Blacktop paired with a MB TA-15 kicks total $@! in the hard rock genre, and does equally well with blues, jazz and even country styles.

I am not a professional player, I just play for fun, so maybe some pros can give suggestions.

Having periodically played professionally from 1968 to the present, I cannot say that I've ever had a problem delivering a good performance regardless of the type of guitar I happened to be playing. My preferred genres include rock (all persuasions), blues, R&B, funk, adult contemporary and some country and it never seems to matter whether I'm belting it out on a Fender or a Gibson. And being a traditionalist about my instruments, I'd never consider sticking some single-coils into a Les Paul or conversely routing a Strat body to accommodate a humbucker. My advice is to select a guitar that offers the best playability and tone, while pleasing the eye of the owner. True that single-coil pickups produce less overall "grunt" than a double-coil humbucker but a guitar's signal can always be augmented by outboard devices. Within that paradigm, it's usually easier to make a single-coil roar like a humbucker than it is to make a humbucker squeal and squawk like a Strat. All of the instruments on the OP's short list are fine guitars -- in their own right or in comparision with one another. Pick the one that sounds the best and is most comfortable to play.

Then you cast your fate to the winds of happenstance.

I favor vintage appointments and specs so the '62 Hot Rod would likely curry the most favor with me.

Also bear in mind that each of the three neck profiles are different from one another. The Eric Johnson sports a 'soft V' profile (on either the maple neck or rosewood fingerboard models), while the American Deluxe sports a 'modern C'. The HR62 is known to have one of the fattest, if not the fattest, neck of any production stratocaster, and as such may be a good candidate for one who is transitioning from a Gibson neck profile.

It really would be in your best interest to try each of them in-person if you don't know where your preferences lie. BTW, of all of the Fender models available, what criteria did you follow to narrow your selection down to these three choices?
