I'm looking at this ...

http://www.stewmac.com/tsarchive/ts0083 ... nches.html

... and a new nut.

The dude working on the guitar said it would need a new rod and or replacement neck. That would only be true if they hosed the threads, right? The rod itself isn't broken.

I'm assuming that if that gets it out and a new one screws on nicely that I'm golden. Otherwise I'm going with a new neck. At $500 for a new new neck (per the fender replacement parts thread above) I think I'd rather try something else first.

It occurs to me that I could put a 21 fret standard maple neck on my guitar for $200. Save some cash and see if I like maple over rosewood. Is a modern standard neck better or worse than my 1993 am standard neck? Other than missing a fret and the shimless neck tilt thing...

If it comes down to outright replacement, you'll likely find the exact replacement you need on Ebay. And for a helluva lot less than seven hundred bucks.

That does seem like a good way to knock a good $100 of the cost of the neck.

That gripper tool will work if the damage is a stripped nut (from using wrong size allen wrench). If the threads on the rod are stripped, that is another issue. There is a device (I think StewMac may have those also), to re-thread the truss rod. You need to enlarge the access hole to get the die in there. But you may be able to re-thread a stripped truss rod.

The MIM Standard neck has a fatter profile than the early 90s American Standard neck. Also, it does not have the hand rolled edges on the fretboard. Personally, I like the early 90s Am. Std. necks much better. However, you should be able to fit a MIM Standard neck on your 93 Am. Std. body. You may need to shim it to get the strings playable.

talk to you later,
Norm
