I have had a 1989 American Strat (maple neck) since I bought it about 10 years ago. It came with Fender Gold Lace-Sensors, but it is NOT a "Plus" model. Maple neck, black & white... My question is, how common is this particular model, how many were made that were not "Plus" models yet had the Gold Lace-Sensors (I actually have Fat50's on it now but I still have the original pickups too). Someone once told me it might be the "Deluxe" American Strat but was only made that one year.

Also, how many were Ash, how many were Alder, and how do I tell the difference? Ser. No. is: E 925263

Thanks for any help.

Hi RayCanPlay1,

Since you bought it used, who knows what model it really is, or if it came with Lace Sensors when new, or if the were installed by any of the previous owners.

No one, except someone that works at Fender, can tell anything about a Strat by the serial number, except the approx time that it was made. Posting some pictures might help.

Assuming it's unmodded it does sound like specs of the "American Standard Deluxe" Strat, which as you say it's an American Standard but it has the gold logo Lace Sensors like a Strat Plus.

Their roughly one year of production was from some time in mid-1989 until some time in mid-1990; therefore there aren't many of them around but they did make enough that they aren't necessarily collectors items either.

As shimmilou says we would love to see some photos.

I think you have already answered your question. They weren't very common- actually a bit of a rarity and most of them end up being mistaken for either a plus model, or an American Standard with aftermarket lace sensors. Pics would help and I'm sure Xhefri would probably chime in if he sees images of it too :)

John C was on the money again! From my website:

Fender introduced an Deluxe American Standard Strat in 1989 and discontinued them in 1990—so they had a short production life of about one year. Take a look at the guitar below and check out the appointments:

They came with all the features of a Strat Plus, such as Gold Lace Sensors, same bridge and body type, but no locking tuners or roller nut. They will often have the E4, E8 or E9 serial numbers too. What these really are is an American Standard Strat with Gold Lace pickups installed.

According to the Blue Book of Guitars, there was an estimated 400 instruments produced. Personally, I think many more than 400 were made as I have owned several and I have questions coming to me every few weeks about these by email. I see them from time to time on eBay as well. They are "some-what" collectable and are sometimes sold, mistakenly, as a Strat Plus. Over time, these may very well be quite collectable. I have one nice one tucked away just as a collectable.
