With all that are out there, I'm sure anyone who wants one can find one eventually.

Now that they are out of production the value can start to climb, right?

If I were interested in investment-grade collectables (and I am), the last thing I'd bet the ranch on would be the nebulous potential of a guitar of which 10,000 or 15,000 copies were made.

(prolly realize a greater rate-of-return on rare baseball cards or vintage comic books)

It's true after a nice decade run. The guitar is gone. I have personally owned 4 of them. I never bought the guitar because of the Artist name. I bought it because it was the only Fender Strat. that had all the features I wanted. 62' Ash body, '62 C neck with Rosewood Fretboard, medium jumbo frets, 3 ply pick guard, and of course Texas Special Pickups. I'm glad I got one of the last of these fantastic Strat's.. I finally came to the conclusion that it was indeed the best Fender guitar for me. Besides I really hate selling and buying the same guitar twice (or more).... Doh!!!

This model has been discontinued as Mark moved to the Grosh camp recently.

Mike Eldred characterised Artist Series guitars as snapshots of the artist's actual gear. Other than the Tribute series, I expect that there are few, if any, which are dead on repros.[Merle Haggard's...a pretty penny] Even the Gilmour has a different bridge pickup from the original. We know that the Beck's pickups are not the same as those in his main stage guitar. In one of the responses, it was noted that the guitar acquired was a serious player for the purchaser. Fortunate to find one on the wall which could be auditioned. There's royal pain in the $@! reality about Fender's product line. Buyers order what will move. There's gear in the products section which I've never seen up closed and personal. If I could get a Clapton neck carve on any Fender guitar of my choice, I would be a happy camper. I also wouldn't mind if Fender did a Tele with the lower horn like that Grosh. I see it as a tad more elegant. But I'd prefer a Clapton neck carve with a Suhr headstock. So much for signature guitars. :?

I got Fender to give me some of the data from their old Mark Knopfler web page and I posted it on my site. http://www.thebrownsrock.com/mark_knopfler_1.html
For as many Mark Knopfler guitars that were produced I sure don't see a lot of them on eBay for sale. I have always had a hard time finding used ones and have bought new almost exclusively.

I love the hype. Some of their stuff really makes me barf!! It isn't as if that's the only guitar they produced fitted with 3 Texas Special pups. You really might have a shot at that tone if you can play a modified claw-hammer style, bearing in mind that the guitar on the record is proported to be a Schecter fitted with who knows what, and not a Fender. The positive side is that you've seen them for sale new. I've never seen a one, even to audition, either at my local GC or SA stores in NY metro, at the time.

Hi chromeface: I saw Knopfler live at the RAH a couple of months ago. He spent the larger part of the evening playing a red Fender Strat that looked mighty like his sig model. If it's been D/C'd he doesn't seem to have taken any notice...

[None the less, I'd sure like to hear it from him as to whether or not it's a guitar one could've pulled off the wall at a local Guitar Center, or if it came to the light of day on the bench of the likes of Todd Krause.

I agree - but I suspect we'll never know for sure how close what he was playing in my photo is to the production line MK Sig. Unless his tech gets interviewed in a magazine or similar - because Knopfler himself seldom talks much about the geeky details we crave for!

Still, the one in his hands at least looked like the one the shops sell (or used to sell). Which is more than you can say for some artist models...

Cheers - C

There are other features which make the Teambuilt JB Customs different than El Becko's personal axe. Jeff's main stage guitar sports a fat baseball bat neck from an old midnight purple '93 and a Wilkinson roller nut - as opposed to the slimmer neck profile and LSR nut found on the regular and custom Artist series.

Only the Masterbuilt JB Customs do sport the aforementioned specs.
