ok I just bought a 2007 mim 60's reverse strat looks like the voodoo strat. I really love it but, the bridge pick up sounds like its out of phase? All the wiring looks good, but it really doesn't sound like a bridge pickup. I replaced it with another pick up and the 1st position sounded great and like it should, but then the 2nd position sounded out of phase? I put the original pick up back in, but still sounds like crap. any one have any suggestions?

Have you checked the polarity of the guitar's other two pickups?

Permanent magnets each have a "north" and a "south" pole (hence the term "polarity).

The easiest way to check the polarity of a pickup's magnets (relative to another) is to remove the pickups from the guitar, place them on a table with their pole pieces facing one another, then gently nudge them toward one another. If the magnets are identically polarized, they will repel one another. If they're polarized opposite, then they'll attract and eventually attach to one another.

Another variable that may be in play in your situation is the direction in which the coil is wound. Generally, a Strat may have a middle pickup configured with reverse magnet polarity and reverse-wound coil. It's possible one or more of your pickups may have reversed magnets but conventionally-wound coils which may account for the symptoms you describe.

so if I flip the pickup around do you think that would fix it? I have changed a lot of pickups but never had this problem? The pickups do sound good don't really wanna change them out, and I also think they might be some kind of special pickups? they are hand signed numbered, neck 714, middle 715 and bridge 716? I have never seen that before? they look correct to the guitar?

Without examining the instrument first-hand I'd be hard-pressed to offer a solution. Perhaps the guitar is built and wired the way it's meant to be.

Perhaps the Martian can help.

It sounds like arjay is on to something one of your pickups probably needs the negative and positive wires switched.

If by itself, the bridge pickup sounds alright but when you team it with the middle pickup, the sound is weak, tinny, hollow and nasal, try reversing the leads of the bridge pickup as that pickup may very well be out of phase with the other(s).
