Yes, thanks Martian. That was a much better explanation than I could give. I think to sum it up, as it says in the article, the base-plate gives more "bite and presence", which is an apt description for the plate when used on the Fat '50s bridge pup. The affect is not dramatic, but noticeable, and the degree to which the pups are affected can vary depending on which pups the plate is used.

You're welcome.

Based on what metal(s) the plate is made from, the magnetic field of a given pickup will be affected which in turn, will alter said pickup's tonality. Naturally, the more powerful the pickup and/or it's magnet(s), the more dramatic the plate's influence will be.

For reference, I use Callaham plates.

Looking at my photos, I remembered one other small mod that I did. Remove the wires that connect the pot cases together, eliminating two ground loops which are a possible source for added noise. The pot cases are connected via the shielding foil and don't need the extra wires.

FWIW, to have even the possibility of a ground loop, there would first have to be two separate power sources of different voltages in the same circuit. A passive pickup wiring circuit surely does not have these.

No, a ground loop is just that, a loop in the ground circuit. It has nothing to do with power sources, but does have to do with current paths to ground. In other words, a ground loop is where there is more than one path to ground in a circuit in which the components are supposed to be at the same potential, such as connecting the pot cases with a wire, and also connecting the cases with the foil shielding. In the case of guitar wiring, these loops can act as an antenna, such as an AM antenna that might come with a stereo. And low current circuits, such as guitar circuits, are actually more susceptible to ground loop problems. And if you consider that each guitar pup is it's own voltage source (created by the string vibrating near it), there are actually three separate power sources on a typical Strat, but that really doesn't matter.

You can indeed have a ground loop when using two or more amps, each with it's own power source, but the power sources have nothing to do with having multiple current paths to ground. Having a ground loop in one amp can also result in hum or buzz, and it is quite commonly known that having the proper grounding in an amp circuit is essential for less noise.

Grounding is a fascinating subject, not well understood by many, and improper grounding can cause noise, erratic circuit functioning when dealing with low voltage circuits, and even electrical shocks.
