Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about buying an American special strat but am a bit confused about fret sizes.

Unfortunately im in a position where I cannot try one of these guitars.

The american special has jumbo frets according to the fender website. So I set about comparing the specs of my other guitars necks against the american special:

According to the fender site the cobain Jag has medium-jumbo frets and the modern player Marauder has jumbo frets.... but to me the frets on the Jaguar are much taller than the Marauder.

Please can someone explain to me if the Maurader definitely has Jumbo frets or not? I really like the frets on the Marauder.

Kind regards,

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

From what I've seen, Fender's view of fret size descriptions is one step above the common perception. In other words, by comparison, their idea of "medium-jumbo" is to me, 'normal', full sized frets or simply, "medium". You can take it from there. Hopefully, other people will chime in as well.

The frets on an American Special/ Highway 1 neck are a lot like Jackson or Charvel frets if that helps any.
They play quite nice.
It helps keep your fingers off the board more with out that weird scalloping thing of the wood.

If you go to the Warmoth Neck builder you can see what the different fret sizes mean. Modern American Fender necks use jumbo 6150 fret wire, and most Gibson necks use Medium Jumbo 6130 frets wire.
